Tweeters Inside or Out?

If I need to lay my monitors on their sides (and fairly close together) due to space constraints, should the speaker tops (tweeters) point toward each other or away from each other?

I would start with them out, but you can certainly try them the other way and see which you prefer.

I guess I was looking for any commonly accepted wisdom. An engineer friend insists they should point inward for accuracy. Seems counter intuitive to me.

Doesn't make sense to me, either.
