Without Marshall any sax player will put you to shame.

yes, be careful! Don't try to play in a band with a saxophone player, unless you have a Marshall (or marshall type) amp, any other amp will make you sound smaller than a rat's fart compared to a sax.

The sax is, indeed, the perfect single sine solo instrument; you can listen to old jazz recordings which pair the sax with other acoustic or gently amplified instruments as proof.

Thankfully for modern guitar players, styles and technology have evolved to place the guitar front and center in a mix. Amp, guitar, and pedal technology has allowed the guitar to stand shoulder to shoulder with any other lead instrument.

Even in cases where the guitar is run clean, it can still hold its own against the sax, trumpet, or other dominant solo instrument by implementing techniques developed by Django Reinhardt, Wes Montgomery, Joe Pass, Andres Segovia, etc. Keep in mind that an instrument's appeal isn't limited to the thickness of it's tone, but rather, its design advantages and quirks.

lots of guitarists play with sax players with clean tones and no marshall amps.

Rodney Jones , Wayne Krantz, Jon Kriesberg, Dan Wilson to name a few. These guys are no mic'ing the amps or running through the house in many cases either.
