A great amp is a wonderful thing to have. A great $200 amp is something I have yet to experience, but I never say "never."
However, why should it be either-or? Regardless of an amp's greatness or awfulness, pedals give one alternate tonal choices for certain songs or recording projects. F'rinstance, my amp doesn't need a distortion pedal to sound fantastic, but I have a couple anyway just for those unusual occasions when I want something different. It's a win-win to have both an amp and pedals. No need to make a decision excluding one or the other. No need to place artificial limits on one's choices unless making the choices causes difficulty.

Icky is right that's my deal too. My problem was I thought I could do that with my super reverb. 2000.00 in pedals later I realized it can't happen so I bought a bugera 333xl. Now a can't light smooth od tones so I bought a Barber DD to run on the clean channel for light classic od tones. Now I can get metal, clear cleans, light od with the barber and any sound that I need.
