FUZZZZ: Earthquaker Devices Hoof vs Blackout Effectors Musket

All this talk about fuzz has me in the mood for a new one. I definitely respect the classic fuzz from the days of yore, however I’m also a big fan of the Black Keys sound as well and LOVE covering their stuff live. So I have come up with two choices I think will fit my needs. The Hoof (4 knob) definitely nails the Black Keys and seems very versatile, but I worry it doesn’t have that vintage sound to cover Hendrix territory. And the Musket (v2) looks like it can cover a TON of ground, but just doesn’t seem to have the RAWK of the hoof. I don’t have a place to go try these so short of ordering both, what have you guys experienced. Thanks

Both are great pedals but your assessment of the Musket is dead wrong. If anything the Musket is far more versatile than the Hoof and can bring the rock i n spades. Again, the Hoof is a great pedal and you would not be disappointed in it, I think. But the Musket with the Pre, Mids and Focus knobs are just awesome...

But the versatility of the Musket, for me, just puts its far and away above any Muff type pedal I own. I have a Musket, Pig Mine, Hoff, Fuzzulator, 2 Stomp Under Foot Muffs (VRH and a one off from Matt) and a few EHX originals and if I had to get rid of all but one, the Musket would win without consideration...

Again all of those are great pedals and I'm glad I don;t have to decide between them. But if I did, without hesitation I would keep the Musket..

Actually, (as i said) I think the Musket can cover alot given the features you mentioned. and I would agree, it looks more versite. But its the RAWKUS sound I hear from the hoof that has my attention. Very edgy and Black Keys Thickfreakness-ish. Can the Musket bring the RAWK??

There's a few really detailed threads here on TGP comparing the 2 pedals you might want to check out. I've owned both and really liked the Hoof more! Its a thicker fuzz and if you're trying to nail the Black Keys tone, this is the pedal you need.

^^^ This. Musket fuzz for sure. So much more versatile, and with the right tweeking you can definitely nail that Black Keys tone as well as the vintage hendrix stuff.

Not sure either the Hoof or the Musket will get very close to Hendrix sounds. They're both two different takes on the Big Muff sound, which isn't something I associate with Hendrix. The Musket is without a doubt far more versatile, but when I had a chance to compare them I really preferred the sound of the Hoof.

I'm a Black Keys fan too...at least their earlier stuff...and if you are you might recognize the guitars...

I agree that neither would not be ideal for Hendrix style fuzz, but which would get me the best of both sounds. Nice pics BTW

I have noticed in demos that the Musket has a very smooth sound, where as the Hoof sounds more splattery. Is it possible to dial in the splattery-ness on the musket. When I think of Hendrix live fuzz I think of a splattery fuzz personally.

For what you want.. you need a twosome.
You get the Musket AND the coolest fuzz pedal I have ever played... the Fix'd Deluxe. It's deluxe on the twosome because the fuzz1 and fuzz2 controls are out the outside instead of trimpots on the inside.
You need to go listen to the PGS demos.

I think your right. looks like the Twosome will cover just about all of my Fuzz needs. The Fix'd Fuzz looks very cool. Do you think the Fix'd fuzz will do a good Hoof imitation?

I guess the other option is to get both the Hoof and Musket. That might be interesting.

I have never played or used a Hoof, so I don't know.
I am selling my Musket right now because I just got the Special Twosome. I want to keep it, but I don't need two!

But seriously.. you should look into the twosome.

I'm partial to the hoof, it just has a great warmth and feel to it- likely due to it being 1/2 germanium. I've checked out all the demos of the musket and it seems like it's too many knobs and stuff to mess around with, at least for me. I find sometimes the simpler the better for me. the 4 knob hoof is really easy to dial a great sound on quickly.

NBarnes21...

I know what you mean about a lot of knobs.
BUT..
I can't get a bad sound out of the Musket.. so it isn't hard to dial in a good sound at all.
That makes all the difference to me!!

I wouldn't put "versatility" and "Musket" in the same sentence. I've had one and quickly sold it. No dynamics.
Just pick the sound you like.

I´m also in the Musket/Hoof limbo...

I´m also looking into both for a fuzz. This is how I see it:
Hoof:
1. More agressive fuzz.
2. It has on tone you can tweak around making it more simple to use.

Musket:
1. More versatile, can make it sound like a distortion pedal if tweaked properly.
2. Too many knobs, might turn one crazy.

I will probably going with the Musket because I want to be able (although I don´t know for sure without trying it...) to get Gilmour, Hendrix and some Pumpkins tone. Looks like the Musket might be able to get there, but with a lot of tweaking....
