New old school modeller day

My GSP1101 is still in the shop getting fixed so I figured I'd better find a good, cheap backup.

I would have liked to get an RP1000 or an HD500 but the budget for this was really small.
The local GC had a nice used GNX3000 (with a Digitech gig bag) for $140 so I grabbed it.
It's not quite as good as the GSP but I've dialed in a few sounds that are very close and actually sound pretty good.
When I first plugged into it I hated it. All the presets (factory and the previous owner's) sounded like absolute trash. After a few hours (it's not nearly as intuitive as the GSP1101) I got the hang of the thing and got some sounds I really liked. The only weak spot is the cabinet IR's. They aren't the worst but they could be much better. They are what keeps the GNX from sounding great IMO. Too bad there is no way to load aftermarket IR's in it.
I like the Warp feature where you can blend 2 different amps together. That's the key to getting some good tones with it. I made a nice clean patch with a blend of a Twin Reverb and a Matchless and a killer crunch with a combination of a JCM800 and a jump panel Plexi. I wish the GSP could do that.
For the price, it will be a great backup for the GSP and will make a nice mini rig for smaller places.
I'm running it into one of those Kustom 12" powered FR cabinets and the little rig sounds surprisingly good.

I just asked about the GSP1101 over at HC. Glad to hear you're up and running in the meantime.

I've been wanting to jump on a set of those Kustoms, but I'm not planning on playing out anytime before next summer at the soonest and even that isn't set in stone.

I used the new 'mini' rig today with my sister's church band.
The GNX sounded really nice and the little Kustom was great. It really will put out a lot of volume and the highs weren't bad at all. I'm really impressed with it.
This is the one I bought:

The GNX3000 is a great sounding modeler. IIRC, that was when Digitech turned a corner with their realism. The modeling gear that came before was much too artificial sounding.

Hey Pete,

Considering all the equipment you've had and all the tones you need for your band. Are these Kustom monitors really that good. Most of my playing anymore is at home bedroom/basement playing. Can't even remember the last time I really fired up my DC-5. Most of my playing is through the RP1000 and headphones. I'm thinking about dumping the Mesa and get either a power amp to use with the Mesa cab or dumping both and getting a pair of these monitors. I get together with a couple of friends now and then for a basement jam and figure with the RP I'm at least using the tones I'm used to.
Everyone recomends all these high end monitors but even though I would use the Mesa funds it's a little hard to justify.
Also what do you use to power the GSP? Same Kustom monitors?

With the GSP I'm using an Art SLA 1 power amp into an H&K 4x12 cabinet.
I'm seriously thinking of switching that out for a couple powered wedges. Maybe Kustoms, maybe not. It depends on my funds.

For a small gig or bedroom stuff I think the Kustoms are perfect. They sound very natural to me and they will get very loud if you crank them. I had the volume on mine at less than 1/4 when I used it yesterday.

I think they'd be great with an RP1000 and as cheap as they are, they're worth trying.
