Thoughts on the weber 5e3 kits?

Hi,

I'm thinking about pulling the trigger on a pre-built 5e3 made from one of the Weber kits. A local store has one for $500 ( if said store owner is reading this, hey!.. don't sell that bad boy yet from under me! ) ....

Anyway, what do you all think of the weber kits? I've heard mixed reviews on them. Some say they are solid except for the non-critical parts like switches and jacks, others say they are all crap. So, thoughts?

And what about $500 for a price for one. The kit itself costs 450$ new, so I guess thats a deal, eh?

Guess it would depend on how well it was built... and there's no way to know unless you can open it up and test it out.

aside from non critical parts, like you said, and as long as they're assembled well, they are still better than anything you could pick up from fender shy of the handwired amps like the vibro king. probably pretty close even to that. I have a weber 5f1 champ I built and is it the best kit amp I could get? no. Is it as good as a Victoria or Clark? no, but it is a lot cheaper and still sounds really dang good! With the margin of tolerances in production in the 50's and 60's, the Weber stuff will get you into vintage sound, not the cream of the crop but average vintage.

Gotcha. I know tone can always been improved. I'm more worried about reliability. I'll be gigging with this and recording. I hate throwing good money after bad, ya know? I don't get to buy equipment often enough, so I try to get the best that I can afford, even if its not necessarily the best out there. Ya dig?

With that in mind, would you consider it reliable?

well, I've had my weber champ now for 3 years with no problems so i would say it's reliable. I mean I don't gig with it, it's a champ, but i do sling it back and forth to my office when I know I'm gonna be stuck there for a few extra hours in between things. Nice to have some stress relief! So it does get some travel time. Other than that, it is my goto amp for pickin' on the couch
