Then came Freddie King collars.

Well Gibbons is a heckuva thief (a very good one though).
Freddie is just outstanding in many many ways! |

On one of his DVD's there's an interview with Freddie where he talks about Hideaway. He says that it was a bar song that everyone was doing, he just happened to get the chance to record it first.
Freddie had his influences too. The blues is a simple form, many motifs have been passed around and back around again. Certainly Freddie was a giant, a great singer and guitar player, one of the best ever.

Well, I broke down and ordered the boxset. Only bummer is disc 5 won't play in any of my CD players. Is the material on disc 5 worth returning the whole set and waiting for a replacement? LOVE discs 1-3.

Disc 5 might be the one with a playtime longer than 80 minutes, i.e., longer than I understood was physically possible for a CD. If it is, I think the replacement will do the same thing. You might solve the problem by ripping the tracks and burning them to two separate CDs of, say, 50 and 40 minutes, rather than returning the whole thing for a replacement that will not be an improvement.

Right on. I worship Freddy King; Freddie King, not so much. I can't listen enough to the King/Federal sides, and up through "Freddie King Is A Blues Master" and "My Feeling For The Blues." After that, the utility of his recordings goes way down for me.

I wonder why they didn't breakup the music on disc 5 and spread it out to an 8 disc set? I've heard wonderful things about Bear Family releases. This seems like an obvious oversight on their part. |

Watched that many times. Amazing. This time though I really noted how he ended many of his notes SMACK DAB on the downbeat, perfectly in sync with the snare shot and a head nod. So nice to hear player paying so much attention to the end of notes (many don't ... Zappa comes to mind...).

Saw Freddie in NYC in 1975 - he was amazing. Played with a fingerpick and a thumbpick on an ES355. He kept spitting on the side of the stage - thought it was rude. He was dead of cancer less than a year later.
