Toddzilla

The original link seems to be lost.

I post this to your listening pleasure. He was shy, but his talent shines through.

Byron was in Henry's public school classroom because the Texas Youth Commission deemed him too disturbed for juvenile prison.
I don't even know where to begin with this statement. As a public school teacher I am furious when I hear and experience things like this. Last year I had a girl removed from my class with a 9mm handgun in her purse. This was the same girl who two years before was removed FOR THE EXACT SAME THING yet some genius decided it was in everyone's best interest to send her back.

I feel for this man's family. Everyone who played a hand in this tragedy should be ashamed to show their faces in public, and be held accountable for their actions (or lack thereof).

Sorry for the rant, but this one hits WAY too close to home for me.

I don't see the timeline any more, but it was just horrible. He was shuffled from place to place in a perverse game of "hot potato", and Todd was holding the potato when it exploded.

Todd was an amazing man, who worked his magic with troubled- He was a Music Therapist for Texas Dept. of Criminal Justice- and disabled kids, many with autism or multiple physical and cognitive concerns. He worked for 5 years, I think, at a school called St. Louis, where the kids that needed more personal attention than could be supplied by the regular schools' Special Education departments for several counties surrounding Tyler. It wasn't unusual for Todd's students to be hospitalized or die during the school year.

Before he went to St. Louis School, he spent a year doing long-term sub work for TISD, and I was lucky enough to be with him one night when one of his former students stopped him at a restaurant to tell him how much he had impacted her life- as a sub, that's pretty much unheard of.

When he started at John Tyler, he had 2 periods without kids. He found the band hall, started talking to the band director, and discovered that the jazz band and mariachi band met on Todd's "off" periods. Just like that, Todd showed up every day to help out and after a month or so, the director turned the ensambles over to Todd, who did the jobs without extra pay.

He wasn't perfect. Nobody is. The day he was killed, there had been a small riot before school, and Byron was seen to be very agitated by the general unrest, but that doesn't explain why he carried a chef's knife to school that day. I have heard that he somehow perceived some threat by another student, but for some unknown reason attacked Todd instead. The attack was completely unprovoked and unexpected- Todd was talking to a teacher and another student (not one of his- but he was a "go to guy" for a lot of collegues) and Byron simply walked up and swung. After he stabbed Todd, he attacked Todd's teaching assistant who defended himself with a laptop computer as a shield, and managed to subdue Byron. The other student has never been back to school, and perhaps never will, feeling personally responsible for distracting Todd. Jan Henry, Todd's wife, has reassured the student and parents that we absolutely don't blame the student at all.

Sorry about the length, I felt like venting, and fleshing out this thread, since the other one somehow disappeared.
