iPad users!

Firstly - I'm going to delete any responses bashing Apple, or Windows, or Linux, et cetera. I like Apple, you may not. It's cool.

Anyway,

I'm about to buy an iPad, and I can't help but wonder how often I'd use the 3G version (except I'm getting mine from Verizon, so it's called something else, I'm sure). To those of you who have the 3G model - do you frequently find yourself using it? Was it worth the $130 premium?

Conversely, to those of you who bought the purely WiFi model - do you sometimes wish you had the 3G capability, or are you fine with your choice?

Thanks, everyone!

Apple sucks......

Just kidding, I'm still riding on a Mac Xmas high, I'm lovin' Apple, lovin' it!!!! I personally don't have an iPad but alot of people I know who have them didn't get the 3G and aren't in regret mode and those that did pay the extra $130 for 3G enabling have yet to sign up for service as they only use it at home or in a hotel room that already has wifi.

I didn't buy the 3g version couldn't see the point, I've got an Iphone.

All of my friends bought 3g and whenever I am with them they never use it, they always log on to the nearest wifi.

Always wondered if you could 'tether' to your iphone.

You know there is a new Ipad coming out?

Apple sucks (you know you can't delete others responses, right?).

Just kidding. I'm typing this from a Mac. I am waiting to see the next gen. iPad. It is rumored to have many improvements.

I use the 3G all the time. Basically, if you expect to be in a wifi environment virtually all the time that you want to use the iPad with online connectivity, you don't need the 3G; if you expect to need to use the iPad outside of wifi coverage, you do need the 3G.

The current 3G iPad only works with At&t as I understand it - not sure what kind of 3G coverage you can use with an iPad bought through Verizon, but whatever it is make sure it is viable and there is coverage where you need it.

If you can wait, the next gen iPad will be out some time soon (no official word when, but I expect no longer than 6 months from now, possibly much sooner.) Though it is mostly speculation and rumor, it is fairly likely that the new iPad will have a number if improvements including being thinner and lighter, with a higher resolution screen, rear facing camera for video conferencing, better speakers, and possibly a faster processor among other upgrades.

It is a great tool - I'm composing this post on my iPad now.

I use my 3G all the time. I find there's a lot less available wifi that I thought there would be, so it was a good decision for me.

Didn't know that. I'll delete the thread ...

Does anyone know when this fabled iPad will be released? Rumors, at least?

early spring time I think. It's supposed to have the camera and web cam setup of the iPhone 4 and 4th gen iTouch IIRC.

And I'm typing from a Mac as well!!

Ha ha....Apples and Macs suck real bad. GO ahead and delete away. We like being "not cool" here at TGP land.

We didn't go for the 3G on my wifes I-Pad. She never took her laptop out the house so why do this for the I - Pad. I'm not sure but I think you can stop and start your 3G contract for I-Pads at anytime ? Thats what my Sis inlaw told me.

Also, rumor has it that a new version is coming out in a few months give or take ?

I use WiFi/3G on a 95%/5% basis.

I always try and latch on to a WiFi network at home, in hotels or on client site. But there have been times when 3G is a real life saver when I have been out at the shops or driving in my car.

I do client technical support, so I use my iPad to RDP to my customers' servers on a regular basis. Quite often I get a call whilst on the road and I have to pull over and use my iPad to log in to their system and resolve an issue. At times like that, 3G is an invaluable fallback. YMMV

if you get the ipad from verizon, they give you a verizon mifi. its a small, rechargable, wireless router. you can use it with anything. im not sure if you NEED a yearly contract. the at&t model, you just pay with a credit card for the months you need it. going on vacation, turn on the service for 30 days. home for two months. turn it off. i see no reason to go the verizon route

I got an Ipad for X-Mas and since it was set up for WiFi in its basic format at $499. I figured that was enough to let me surf the web while on vacation or wherever and therefore I didn't see the reason to go with the 3G upgrade. New version is April and will have a slightly upgraded screen and a forward facing camera HOWEVER it will only work with another new version Ipad or Iphone 4 which sucks in my opinion.

I bought the 32GB WiFi only model, and if I had it to do all over again, I'd get the 16GB 3G + WiFi model.

I store basically zero content on the device locally, save for my pdf textbook collection. All music, TV, and movies are streamed from my MacPro using various apps.

my suggestion would be to get the wifi version and a portable wifi brick. Just about every provider has them and they allow you to be a 3G or 4G hotspot.

I have one from sprint. what I like about it is that it allows multiple wireless devices to use the wifi, if that makes sense.

I have to do lots of demonstrations in places where their networks suck, this has allowed me to be essentially assured of a good experience....
