Maz 38 Headroom?

Hey there,
i'm thinking about a Maz38. It seems to be a very cool amp!
I want it as a pedal platform and i want to use a boost pedal to use
the amps's natural overdrive.

The most important part is: how does it take modulation pedals?
Enough headroom? I hate it when the preamp distorts the delay etc.
that's really annyoing if you make psychedelic rock like i do.

Other option for me would be a fender twin/ddri, of course a SF.

Greetings,

Jbots

...i had a maz 38 and a deluxe reverb at the same time...i was amazed at how close in tone i could get the maz to the deluxe...of course the Maz is a real chameleon and could do things that the deluxe could not...clean headroom was plenty big...bigger than the deluxe.....considerably less than a twin....that said if i was lookin for a set it and forget it pedal platform Z with big headroom...the rt 66 i had would be my preference over a Maz38....but its a loud sucker and if that was too much volume i'd opt for the Z-28 which is similar in output to a deluxe...

I have the 38 with reverb, it stays pretty dang clean with my strat...even if I turn up the volume and master well past noon..IMO. Humbuckers, yes, get more grit and dirt, but still not like massive amounts of overdrive..and its pretty freakin loud. I've never used any pedals like your wanting to use, so I cant comment on that, but I've heard/read that its suppose to really do well with different pedals. You might want to check out the Dr Z forum...theres tons of guys there with way more experience with the amp, than I have at this point.

The 38 is a LOUD amp. It is also very clean, especially with single coils guitar. With humbuckers guitar it depends how loud play it will stat to give you some grit. If you want fender cleans loud then get the twin. Having said that the Maz has tones, lots of them that you will never get with a Twin. As far as taking pedal it is really good for that, really transparent with them.

I had a 1x12 38 with reverb, but didn't care for it. Bummer at the time and I sold the amp.

I traded for a 2x10 38 no reverb here and absolutely dig it. With single coils, it's the best tone I have had. Plenty of clean headroom. HB's get dirtier faster. There is a HB input for a little less volume. I'm not a big fan of the amp's OD, but it is very pedal friendly for light OD. Very quiet running rig. Not a grab and go amp, but that's what handtrucks are for. This Z ended my GAS for EL84's amps. Plenty of headroom and a pedal lover.

I bought some Rheinhardt labeled Weber Blue Pups and installed them. Even better sounding to my ear. I put some various EL84's that were in the tube drawer. I liked the matched JJ's that were in there, but this experiment gave me more overtones. cool amp to futz with

What more do I need? Not much

It's a tough question to answer as it depends on what volume level you play at and how much clean headroom you need. Unless you're playing big rooms un-mic'd and/or play with a mega loud drummer (and band) you might be able to get away with a Deluxe Reverb for you application. I do, and I'm told pretty often to turn down.
