Amy Chua Drummer Put-Down

Not sure if anyone has read any articles on Amy Chua, the Yale law professor, who wrote a book on parenting Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother, recounts raising her two daughters, now 15 and 18, using what she calls “Chinese parenting” methods.

Regardless of the actual content of the article, I thought Ms. Chua unwittingly uttered one of the most all-time, searing, put-downs of drummers.

She says in the article "There is a common pattern you’ll see: an Asian and a Western child will start with a violin; six months later the Western child will want to switch to the clarinet because the violin sounds terrible, and then four months later the clarinet turns out to be hard so their choice is the guitar, and then you’re at the drums."

The last part was a screen cleaner for me!

Here's a link to the article: http://www2.macleans.ca/2011/01/13/a...kes-parenting/

Hahha I read the article about the Asian way to raise children vs Westerners. Found it very true as a stereotype. Especially in Toronto, where the Chinese community is very very ... Asian and less muddled with Western culture.

I played piano until 14, playing Clarinet in the band for several years until I decided to drop it all and just play guitar =P

A huge portion of all my Chinese friends played violin and piano.

So when did you start doing drugs? Or does that wait until you take up the drums?

A lot of really disciplined classical kids learn to play the absolute fool out of the piano or the violin, then never learn to be creative in music at all.

The world needs polished violinists, but it also needs Travis Barker!

"Western children" switching to a clarinet???

I call bullsh#t on that one...

Only Yosh Schmenge would go for that switch...

Chua's on crack. She's probably a closet drummer!
