Too much hum coming from this amp? (video inside)
I have interest in this amp, the clip sounds good to me, but is that background hum normal, or a bit too much? Thanks!

Hum went significantly down when you changed guitar position relative to the amp in the very beginning. It also went away when you turned guitar volume down at the end of the vid. Suspect guitar picking up interference from shop lighting installation. Can you take the amp home for a day to try out?

Thanks.
Unfortunately I can't take it at home to try, that's why I was asking here.

Does it hum like that with a humbucker equipped guitar that also has good shielding?

My house sits right next to a huge power transformer for all the street lights in my neighborhood. Lots of hum in the front side of my house at night. It really sucks but what can you do? Guitars with humbuckers get it less but not totally eliminated.
I even get hum from the shielded guitar cord alone plugged in. My litmus test is whether the amp hums with nothing plugged into it and all the controls maxed out....for things like heater hum, bad filter caps, poor shielding, bad tubes, ground loops etc..... All my amps are dead quiet that way. Maybe a little hiss from the tubes. A nice vintage boutique amp like that has probably been taken care of well by the time it ends up in a guitar store. It's the off-brand stuff you find at a garage sale that you need to really be careful about needing a cap job/failing components etc. |
