Matching a Speaker to a Low Wattage Amp
I just purchased a new VHT Special 6 head and it is currently connected to a 1x12 Avatar cab with a WGS ET 65 (65 watt speaker).
I have a 25 watt Greenback sitting in my closet not being used and I was wondering... Because the VHT 6 is only 6 watts, would it sound better with a lower wattage speaker?.....in other words, should I replace the 65 watt speaker that is currently in my cab with the 25 watt Greenback? Because the WGS ET65 speaker is 'stronger', does it take more power for it to hit its 'sweet spot'? ...I hope this makes sense. |

Just try it and see how it sounds. At max volume the amp is probably pushing 10-12 watts so it may be enough to get the G12M moving more than the 65. I like both speakers but would think that the 25 would sound "better" IMO of course.

Speaker wattage tells you almost nothing about the sound. Just use whichever you think sounds best.

Just make sure the impedance is a match or slightly higher on the speaker.

i suggest experimenting with the different combinations, as you probably will anyway. i sometimes play a 5 watt class A through a 150W black shadow - i've personally found it cleaner compared to the internal 25W speaker. speaker efficiency? i don't really know.
