If you're a Fender amp kinda guy...does that ever change?
I love vintage Fenders, and all the boutique off shoots...is it possible to ever truly love another type of amp?
Something voxy, marshall-esque? Or will you always be searching to get back to that Fender type clean tone? It's been kinda difficult for me to get away from Fender types...anyone else have this experience?

I've converted. I used to be a Fender only guy... but for the past 2-3 years I've built a couple of Marshall circuits and amps for myself that does a better job for me.
In the end, I have a JTM45/100 amp that I built that is a perfect mix of fender and Marshall because of the higher NFB and KT66 tubes. I still love fender, there is a shimmer and solid feeling behind them, but for live work with a band, the grind and versatility of the Marshall circuit has shown to work better for me. |

I started out as a Marshall guy back when I didn't do much clean playing, but now I consider myself a Marshall and Fender guy. Fender cleans and Marshall crunch are the standards.

Style of music is everything. Some things Fender just won't do. Some things Marshall, Vox just won't do. Boutiques never are really exactly Fender or Marshall or Vox. Often times better, but not the same. The more I refurb and upgrade my amps (Fenders) the less I like the originals. But in the same way, the more I refurb and upgrade my amps (Fenders) the more they sound like Boutiques rather than originals.

Recent convert here. Used to be a Tweed, Blackface, etc. 6L/6V6 only guy. Loved the smoothness and bell like clarity. Always thought EL34/84 tubed amps were harsh, dry, and nasty. Then I played a EL84 based Matchless (Avenger in my case) and heard a warm, clear, shimmering and rich tone that really turned my head around. So I'll always have my 6L6 amps, but I'm in love with my Matchless and sniffing around for possibly another.

Nope. Once you're tone deaf, you're always tone deaf.
^ Just joking. I love fender amps.

I may have flings with Voxy amps and flirtations with Marshalls and Hiwatts, but at the end of the day, my desert island amp sounds like some Deluxe Reverb on steroids.

I spent over 10 years buying some really cool amps, but have come back to vintage Fender. Who knows, maybe I'll make the circle again.

I used fender BF and SF amps for 20 years and then tried some Matchless, Top Hat and Bad cats for a while - Ended up with tweeds for the last 5 years and recently added a Dr Z to the mix (sort of in the clean camp although admittedly Voxy).
Never was a high gain or Marshall kind of guy I guess. I think Tweeds are the best of both worlds. I will say I think the best tone I ever had was with my 1965 Pro Reverb. The Z, though new to me, might win my heart and signal a changing of the guard. |

I'm normally Fender clean oriented, but I'm using Komet since the cleans are unexplainablely good, Maybe not as 'big' as Fender but more brilliant and does the overdrive far better than my Fender/boutique BF's that i've had. Best of both worlds of Fender and Marshall really.
