Dyson versus Shark vacuum cleaner

I am in need of a new vacuum cleaner and am considering a Dyson DC 25 and a Shark Navigator Liftway.
Both swivel, both have washable Hepa filters, both are sealed systems, don't lose suction, etc.
The Dyson is 2 to 2 1/2 times the price. This is not the issue. I want to buy the right machine for me, regardless of the price.

The thing I like about the Shark is you can lift the canister off of the machine to carry around when doing dusting, etc. The Dyson cannot do this.

I know Dyson's reputation is good, it has a 5 year warranty. A friend owns one and he and his wife are very happy with it.

I do not know Shark's reputation. It does come with a 10 year warranty.

Does anybody here have any experience and opinions they would like to share on either or both models.

Thanks

I don't know anything about Dyson and I only know about one Shark dirt sucker that my wife bought that she really hated because it didn't suck...which of course means in vacuumese, that it sucked.

i had the dyson animal (non-ball) and it was awesome. not 500 bucks awesome, but pretty great. a lot of the cost goes to name/marketing. i'm sure they were way ahead of the game a few years ago but it looks like other companies (like shark, i guess) are catching up.

the one really cool thing about the dyson is that it's pretty much like a lego system and the entire thing can be taken apart and cleaned very easily and it just snaps back together. i'm not sure if the shark features that.

In my experience, Shark products are decent for the money but IN NO WAY SHAPE OR FORM compare to anything Dyson has to offer. Kia vs. Mercedes.

Weird how guitarists get worked up about vacuums- we have a vac thread every couple of months or so.

My .02- Having owned a Kirby, Oreck (used, from a pawnshop), highly-rated-by-Consumer-Reports Kenmore, and a Dyson, I'll say, without hesitation, that the Dyson is the best one I have owned, and by a large margin.

Dyson. We love ours. Works great, even with 2 dogs.

Same here. A complete waste of money, and I will never buy anything with the Shark brand again.

I just bought a Dyson DC28 Animal last weekend. It really sucks, in a good way.

Good point. I was thinking along those lines myself. The only thing I like better about the Shark is the liftaway feature. It looks very cheap compared to the Dyson. I can at least try the Dyson at my friend's house too.

Thanks guys, you have been a great help, as always.

Man, the Dyson's are expensive!
We went through a few years of expensive vacuum cleaners.
The first was a Lightning I think it was called. One of the first bagless vacs.
It was a canistor and it lasted about a year before the wires in the hose started losing contact.

So then we bought a upright of the same brand.
About a year later it was junk.

So now we just buy a Dirt Devil upright for around $50. I swear the one we have now has been going strong for over two years.
When it breaks, we'll just buy another one.

What I like about the Dyson is that it doesn't spew dust as it works. I also like the filter system it has.

Check out HSN.com. They offer a 5-pay payment plan similar to zzounds.com and americanmusical.com. Interest free purchases are great!

Compared to the prices of the Kirby ($6-800) and the Rainbow vacs($1000-$1300), the Dyson is a steal.. We have two Dysons, the upright and the canister, and they both are awesome.. We've had the Fantoms and some of the other bagless HEPA systems and the Dyson far and above outperforms them all.. It always amazes me how much these buggers pull out of the carpet (We have animals, and ALWAYS get a ton of fur weekly)

I think we had a Shark at one point, but it was out of here faster than a speeding bullet..

Dyson here. Three years, two dogs, two kids. I think it's the original upright and I can say I can't remember the last time I was so happy with a household purchase. Already outlasted the previous two vacuums combined, so I'd say that just like buying tools the initial expense of a quality tool is more than made up for in longevity, no time lost to repairs, and performance.
