will the weber 10F150T really improve my PRRI?
hey guys I have been playing fender reissue blackface amps for years now, and of course love the clean but drive is always a compromise.
I current have a PRRI, and TRRI, and a Voxac15. the vox obviously gets me the drive tones I want, but being a huge Ryan Adams fan I bought a princeton. In the mix on about five, it usually sounds fine (in rehearsal) but the stock speaker is without a doubt unuseable for drive sounds. Yes it sounds great clean, but I bought a princeton thinking it was gonna give me some breakup and be a great Mike Campbell/Adams amp that could be a portable recording/live amp when mic'ed. I bought the tone tubby that Ryan Uses and still wasn't that pleased with it. Now checking out this Weber speaker being more resonably priced seems like my last option. I always have the twin for my fender clean w/drive pedals use, but the reason I have a princeton to actually get the amp to give a lil bit. Do you guys know of any clips or experience of using this speaker whilst actually turning up the amp and trying to get a lil breakup? And is it really worth it? |

That's the speaker recommended by Wayne at Headstrong Amps. He builds excellent clones of blackface PR amps. He's an expert in this niche. On his recommendation I put a 10F150T in my Super Champ XD and it was quite an improvement. It's a crappy amp so it still sucks but it sucks less.
I don't know if it will help your breakup tones but it's an upgrade in general. For breakup you might consider an Allen Accomplice. That amp has a MV and a RAW control. Both helpful with breakup. A great blackface style amp.

that speaker will make the amp a lot louder, and cleaner, bigger bottom, take more to overdrive.

It isn't the speaker. It's the tone stack that is tripping you up. You need to re-voice it to take some of the scoop out. See if you can find a local tech who will replace the 6.8K fixed mid resistor with a 10K or even a 15K resistor. This mod will take some of the tone sucking mid-scoop out of the tone stack and let the amp breath.

If you want grind/breakup try an alnico seaker...I'd suggest a Weber 10A125...

Very good with OD, though, and if you like your PR to be louder, it does that too. YMMV.
