Drilling body for Floyd Rose studs
I'm in the process of fitting a Gotoh Floyd Rose to an Ibanez JS-100 body, and am wondering if anyone has experience to share regarding the size of the hole to drill.
The studs are 11.3 mm in diameter. I've drilled a 27/64" hole (10.7156 mm) which seems too small - I don't want to split the wood. Then again, .6 mm doesn't seem like a lot of difference. I have an 11 mm drill bit, and a 7/16" bit (11.1125 mm), but I also don't want to drill the hole too big. Anyone know what size bit to use, or how much wood to leave? |

I know when I drilled new 11mm bushing holes for an Ibanez Edge trem, they were snug. Very snug. I could not push them in by hand. I used a wood dowel on the bushing and tapped it in with a hammer. Maybe try some test holes in scrap wood to see what size they go into best.
By the way, where did you get the Gotoh Floyd Rose? I noticed GPDUSA is sold out of all of them. Wondering if there is another place carrying them. Last edited by Zero; 02-13-2011 at 12:22 PM. |

In a related question, what was wrong with the original Ibanez JS-100 bridge?

That's my guess as to 'why'. |

Are you using a drill press? I drilled holes for a Floyd by hand and it wasn't a successful operation.

Thanks for the responses!
Nothing really wrong with the stock LO-TRSII trem, I just thought the Gotoh would be better. I'm also planning on upgrading the pickups, even though the stock ones aren't all that bad. I ordered the Gotoh from http://www.guitarpartssite.com/Gotoh...300-010-AP.htm I used a Wolfcraft drill guide to keep the drill steady - which seems to have worked so far. I did find a reference on the web where someone used a 25/64" (9.9219 mm) bit for 10 mm stud, so probably an 11 mm or 7/16" bit would do the trick. I'm definitely going with the scrap wood suggestion first, though. |
