hard case causing string to pop out at nut?

I've noticed when I bring my guitars home from travel and open up the hard case, some of the strings will be dislodged out of the nut. It lays in my back seat or stands upright from time to time. I have the standard electric hard cases from gator and skb. Anyone notice this problem? Do I need to throw an extra piece of foam on top of the guitar. what do you do? I'm sure the tension it's causing on the nut is no good and tears at it. It seems to fit the guitars well, don't feel any sliding around.

thanks
