To keep or not to keep: KoT v4

Man I can't decide whether to keep this or not. $350 worth of pedal is a lot. It does sound really great and amp like...I just can't shake the feeling the there is a combination of 2-3 pedals that won't do the job better.

Can you talk me either way? If you have a KoT v4 and sold it what did you replace it with? If you sold it, do you regret it? If you bought it and don't regret it what did it bet out for you?

I'm playing strat through a princeton reverb. I play rock and blues with some jazzy elements on a rare occasion.

OD's I'm considering:

Eternity
LTD v2
TS808
Barber DD
Some kind of Fuzz

I think I could get an E, LTD and Fuzz for the price of my KoT and don't know that I'd be less happy...

I'm keeping mine...even if it ends up in the box for years. I know it won't, but it is going to be one of those classics. I may even buy another with the 4 jack option...I love the yellow side. It could trail so many other od pedals.

I had the same thought and had a RC and BB from Xotic. Those are both good as well, but the KOT just sounds better. It seems more integrated, I don't know how else to describe it. Look at this way, it's one box, not two or three random things which may or may not work together.

I think it might help if you think about it as two pedals in one box rather than one pedal. So for $175 a piece that's not really too bad.

I have two Kot's one on the board and one for jams.

I had one and thought it was awesome, but there are a lot of other boxes that are set up like that, that are also awesome - Tim, 7 Knob King of the Britains. I offed mine because at the time, I liked the KotB better. It's not that the KotB was better, just closer to what I was looking for (Marshally, "amp like"). Now that I have a Tim, I may or may not off the KotB. I'm trying to hold off on that decision for as long as possible.

I agree with Marvelboy about keeping the KoT and getting a fuzz. I'd save a hundred and change and buy a used E, then flip that for whatever's next on your overdrive curiosity list, and so on. I think you'll find that none of the other overdrives really bring anything to the table that the KoT can't deliver. It's just that the other ODs are unexplored territory. When you get done with all that, get a used London Fuzz and you'll be good to go.

2 pedals in 1 - sounds great - I use mine - I set the left for the cleanest boost possible and the right for more singing gain.

It's like 2 $175 pedals that hold their value and take up little space.

I've got a similar rig (ASAT Special w/trem into DR-like amp w/ 2x10 cab) and I preferred my Solid Gold FX Superdrive to the KoT. The KoT got close to my Superdrive (nice drive characteristic, articulate) but the KoT was more colored (SD was truer to my amp). Someone was selling a Superduperdrive (Superdrive plus boost) for dirt cheap, or you could buy one from PGS and, if it didn't do it for you, you could return it. -E

I scored one on fleabay a few years ago and immediately loved it. After a few months, the shine wore off and I was tempted to sell it a few times and even removed it from my board. After a year or so, I grabbed it with a strat and a 5e3 for a quick band practice and remembered why I liked it so much.I immediately got on the waiting list for a new one [just got it late december ] and keep one on my board and on as a grab and go to put in the case of whatever guitar I head out the door with.

Solf my KOT v. 4 - Didn't sound good at all through either of my amps - tweed Bassman and a JTM 50 clone. No regrets. I'm currently using an OCD v.1 and a Plimsoul.

No surprise, it was made to be used with bf Fender's. Not every pedal works with every amp.
