Telecaster CC Neck pick up - big route necessary?

I'm planning the installation of my Lollar CC neck pick up and I'm wondering if I really need to route a huge cavity.

The Lollar website shows a humbucker-sized route and this leaves a huge gap around the pick up itself.

I've just traced the CC pick up baseplate and it's not much bigger than the original pick up so I'm inclined to only route out the size of the pick up base (plus a 2mm-ish gap around it) which will be much neater.
Anyone else done this?

FYI, I'm intending to pickguard mount the pick up so adjusting the height of the pick up can be done without removing the pickguard.

Any pictures would be useful.

Thanks in advance.

Peter

Hello Pete :/
When I installed my CC pickup I had to increase the size of the route to enable me to screw the pick up to the guitar body.

More when I get back. I have to go to the post office. BTW that lollar CC in the neck is a very nice pickup indeed.
Best
Paul

Hello Paul

We'll have to stop meeting like this!

I'm thinking that the pickguard mounted option might be best, hence why I think I can get away with a smaller pick up route.

I'm certainly looking forward to "more".

You know I've seen some pick gaurd mounted ones and often wondered if Jason does that. The pickup and gaurd on this guitar both came from Mr. Lollar and I just figured that this is how he did it....
Pick gaurd mounted is the way to go for sure as it is much easier to adjust hieght and all and would make the installation much much easier. This is actually the first guitar I ever put together and getting that CC in there was a PITA.Best sounding guitar I have though.

The Lollar in the neck is very low output and is clear and clean and very close to humbuckerville. The bridge pick is a Roy wrap from Don Mare and is just as a tele should sound. Clear clean and biting with out the peircing in your face sound. Sweet guitar really.

Have you looked into Pete Biltofts offerings? So many choices so little time. I'm off to prep that pine body for binding. I'll sand dye and route the body and install the binding tomorrow. I'll send you some pix. Oh yea I'll forward the tracking info in just a bit. It's out in the truck still.
Best

Good advice. Thanks.

I've already got the pick ups. I bought them from sekt88 here on TGP. I'm going with the Lollar BS bridge pick up. Should be awesome!

Thanks for the tarcking info. Let's see what get's to whom first! LOL! I reckon the bridge will be with you mid-week.

hey Peter

i've got the Vintage Vibe CC set.
Rob D at Frettech installed them and since the CC is wider than a HB he used a Dark Star bass pickup template that he already had.
pretty big route

that was over 2 years ago and this is still my favorite guitar

I've dealt with Rob too and he did a great job for me.

Your pick up route is interesting as that's what I want to avoid. Have a look at this.

It's a rough tracing of the pick up baseplate shape laid on a Tele template. It's not that much bigger and I'm sure I could neatly route it.

Anyone done anything similar?

Peter
