Redd Volkaert. Damn.

Of course this isn't news to anyone. But I just had to add my signature to the long list. Saw him do a free show at Continental Club last Friday afternoon at 3:30 p.m.. (God bless Austin, Texas.) After the first tune, an extended uptempo blues instrumental, I turn to my girlfriend and say, "We can leave now. He just did everything it's humanly possible to do on a guitar."

We agree with this thread title. Quite amazing.

He's a member at TDPRI. Great guy.

One of about 7,692 things that I miss about living in Austin.

i got into austin on friday. missed dale watson by a day, alejandro escovedo by two days. david grissom played the day after i left. there were others, too. at least i saw redd. i stayed out of guitar stores because i knew that i'd fork over $$ in the mistaken belief that it's the town and not the player.

speaking of big fingers (Johnny Hiland, Buddy Whittington), I had a friend with such hands. no matter what guitar he played, it sounded muffled. But when he played a Tele, it sounded terrific -- more alive and nice and full. When they say "It's all in the fingers," I don't think they just mean your style; I think different kinds of fingers create different tones due not only to grip strength but shape, size, density of those digits and how the tone reverberates through them. Heck, if you're going to talk about rosewood vs. maple boards and maple vs. mahogany necks, and stainless steel vs. nickel alloy frets, you gotta consider the sonic properties of what's on the other side of the string -- the fingers.

Amazing player. I asked a question about his guitar once at TDPRI and he responds with something like "I'm not really sure what it is, I'll look". Not often do you get to actually ask the man on these forums.

Fantastic player. Also one of those guys who can plug into anything and sound darn good. He's known to gig the old Peavey ss pedal steel amps when on the road.

I saw Redd and Bill Kirchen at the Sportsman Tavern in Buffalo a couple of years ago. It was a hot and sweaty night and they both tore it up!

He was playing through a SS amp and his tone killed! During a break, I eyeballed his pedal board and asked him " Redd, I thought played through a Klon, I don't see one on your board." He turns to me and says: " What the F*** is a Klon" !

Gotta love a guy who can take a Squire Tele through a G-Dec and blow everyone away. Amazing player and a real cool guy!

Also has a great stage presence. Teased his bassist about needing a haircut, then took off his own baseball cap casually and said, "But it won't matter in a few years." Big laughs, including the bassist. The bassist's hair wasn't long at all, but he and Redd exchanged jokes about the bassist letting his "freak flag" fly. He gives the bassist a solo in Song 2, which is super-cool. Then says, "How about all these dancers on the floor? We're seeing a lot of 'em." Which was a purposeful joke, because the ladies had on short dresses and were showing off their dancing gams.

Just a great entertainer.

He's pretty amazing. Another awesome thing about Redd is he hangs out over on the Tele forum so if you have any questions about his gear or anything, he'll actually answer.
