analog delay into digi delay? or vice versa, and why?
My choice is a DD-6 going into a Carbon Copy. I mainly use the DD-6 for reverse delay, but whenever I would try a long/short delay combo, having the DD-6 after would kind of make the repeats a little too cold sounding. Having the Carbon Copy last really warms up the repeats of the DD-6, as well as adding it's own lush flavor. And it really makes the reverse delay pop as well. How about errbody else?

FWIW, Roger Mayer has discussed extensively about trying to keep a signal from going back and forth between digital and analog and trying to keep it analog for as long as possible. So, if the only digital pedal you have is a delay, the idea would be to have it last in your chain. For more info, the full dialog is in Dave Hunter's book.

from what i've read on this forum, Boss delay pedals utilize analog dry through signal, so i'm not claiming the tone difference is because of a/d-d/a conversion or anything like that, probably just a result of its interaction with the carbon copy. and the dd-6 isn't the only digital pedal on my board.

I put analog delay (like Ibanez AD-80 or Boss DM-2) as the last in chain when I specifically wish to add vintage flavors to the sound, in other words after digital delay pedal that does main clean delay job.
This is one of reasons why old pedals are so sought after and there is no equally great alternatives for them in digital world. Ambience and thick, dark echos are irresistible for some arrangements. Also, using two or more analogue delays is nothing unusual, due to lack of digital conversion, such sound is almost always nicer and more 3D. On the other hand using two digital pedals in chain is way to make sound sharp and unpleasant in general. Boss DD-2 is one of exceptionally nice sounding digital delays. For most of other needs digital delay in the end of chain is the most likely scenario. |

to avoid pops /stomp click noise being repeated over n over ( must invest in good analog delay to solve that prob) and being fed into the digital delay ..i place the digital before the analog

I run a DD5 into a DMMxo into a DD20...and I have no idea what I am doing.
I don't stack the three, but at times will run the DMMxo into the DD20. I just firgure that the digital keeps the basic sound of the DMM unchanged once it passes through, whereas if I have that clean digital repeat going into the DMM it is just gonna get, well, less clean? Kinda depends what you want from the delays right? Maybe some of the ambient kinda player guys will comment. If that is up your alley then maybe it will help out... Bump for for some of the |

I run a MXR CC into a DD-7 so analog into digi. If I'm to make use of the hold function on the DD-7 it makes sense to have it last in the chain.

I always put analog delay after the digital.

A->D / D->A is brutal. My question is, do digital delays let the original dry signal through the analog path unscathed and just process the repeats digitally, mixing it in at the output D->A stage? If so, that's not so bad.

I go digital to analog. I like my delays to get grimier and dirtier as they repeat, so I start clean (digital) and stack a pretty long analog after that. I like hearing it degrade gradually. I treat it kind of like my dirt pedals- clean boosts -> heavier drive

+1 also my digital delay is a looper & I like looping a clean sound & having the analog delay artifiacts come after.

I go Digital to Analog as well.
