Guitar Setups

I do most of my own guitar maintenance. I bought Dan Erlewin's "How to Make Your Guitar Play Great" and find it to be a very good book for non "techy" types like me. That said, I have a Fender Deluxe Stratocaster HSS. It has a metal looking nut on it. I'm getting just a bit of string/fret rattle that wasn't there a couple of months ago so I'm thinking it's probably time to look at the basics (truss rod, action, etc...) and adjust where necessary. Are there any special considerations when setting guitars up that have these types of nuts? Thanks!

The nut shouldn't be the issue. Sounds more likely to be fret buzz caused by your action set too low or an adjustment of the truss rod may be necessary. Those nuts are pretty much maintenance free. If it's the LSR nut like I am thinking it is, make sure all the ball bearings are still in place.

"LSR nut"

Thank you! That's what it's called. The darn name was on the tip of my tongue when I started the thread, but I just couldn't pull it out of my brain.

Hey no prob. One of the things I loved about my deluxe hss was the LSR nut. Pretty great design. I loved that I could go from 9's to 12's without having to get the nut cut to compensate. I no longer have that guitar, but aside from the slight possibility of the bearings falling out when the strings are removed, I guess you could make sure the tiny screws that hold it in place are tight, and a little oil on the ball bearings from time to time never hurts. Other than that, nothing special should need to be done to the nut.
