A question for vocalist??
I have a big concert I'm singing at on saturday night, I'm getting over Bronchitis and I'm about 90% better, still coughing a bit and still blowing my nose a bit. Is there any way to deal with this bit of sickness before the concert? Dayquill or some other good drug to get rid of these symptom even temporarily before the concert.
Its a lot of heavy singing making the most of my vocal range. I find that when I'm moving a lot of air I tend to cough a lot.

when my voice would self destruct because of too much singing, allergies (coughing/sneezing) etc... this always helped me get through a gig
#1 save your voice. don't do a lot of talking if you can help it. speak softly. #2 don't drink or smoke. #3 keep hydrating. especially hot tea with honey. keep sipping it. all day. its delicious and it will help. #4 as for the sickness, just sleep/rest and take care of yourself.

Dayquill or Nyquill will dry out your voice. You'll be sounding like a frog after a while on that stuff.
Yes. Hot tea with honey. |

I'll stick my neck out and say:
WARM tea and honey, not too hot... you're not trying to cook your vocal cords here. DO NOT drink anything cold, especially ANY iced alcoholic beverage! Get lots of rest before the show, don't talk a bunch (especially the day of...), do some easy warm ups, if you know some. Even when I've been hacking my lungs out, the adrenaline usually kicks in and I can get through the night... Good luck!

Every gig I ever played my throat and mouth would be dry as a bone. 1/2 a stick of Wriggleys Doublemint solved that. Just be careful not to swallow it when you really get crankin'. Also phlegm in the sinus can drip down and cause you to cough. Try and blow it out between numbers.

Have you tried Throat Coat tea? It's basically black licorice, which is great for your throat. Most health food stores will carry it, and Whole Foods will most definitely have it.

A fireman bud taught this to me, to get rid of chest congestion after he suffered from smoke inhalation. It's not any fun at all but it does work.
Vick's vapor rub, very hot water, stick your head over it (with a towel over your head and the pot) and breath in deeply. It doesn't take much to get to expelling that congestion. |

Don't drink any alcohol or caffeine. Tepid clear fluids. A more natural alternative to the vicks is to boil some fresh thyme and breathe the steam.
Warm up with some vocal exercises before the gig. Good luck.
