Tweed amp with EV12L ?
I was wondering if anyone has tried a EV12L with a low to mid powered tweed style amp ? Pro's or Cons ? Thanks

I like them with my 5E3 head, especially Thiele based cabs. For a combo it would add a lot of weight, and the baffle may not hold them. The pros are that they are a very neutral sounding speaker, and the tones of the amp come through with no speaker coloration. This could actually be a pro or a con. The con is the aforementioned weight, could make a nice grab and go amp into a heavy beast.

I would use a head . I already have the Forte 3D cabs loaded with EV12Ls. Thanks for the info. More comments appreciated.

Yes - I love EVM12L's in my Lil Dawgs - but mostly for the higher output ones.
I've had quite a number of tweeds, right now I've got a Lil Dawg 35 watt 1x12 5E3/Super hybrid. It's in a deep deluxe cab, but the EV is perfect for it. Covers all the territory. I've got a new 12 watt almost stock 5E3 coming and I will be trying out an EV in that as well. - D PS: they are really heavy and since most tweed cabs only have 4 screws, you might consider a custom build - or don't bang it around! ;-) |

To me, the old style alnico Jensen speakers are part of the tweed sound. That's what I prefer to hear. I've got Webers in my Kendrick tweed Bassman clone, and a Weber in my '60 Deluxe. I think an EV 12L is too much speaker for a tweed Deluxe, but that's just my taste.

For me a lower powered tweed, Vox style, or blues type amp about to blow up are about the only cases I prefer other speakers than an EV. That would apply to a Pro Jr as well but since I like EV's so much someone someday may be able to convince me otherwise. I have tried all the above and that is my conclusion.
EV's excell to me for cleans, especially sparkling BF cleans, channel switching amps, D style, most overdrive tones, a clean platform with pedals also is great, and anytime I want high headroom. But for at least smaller tweeds I want a warmer speaker, headroom is not a consideration, in fact I only want so much, and I think the EV alters the traditional character too much. |

I did a whole CD using a tweed Tremolux into a Bag End cab with a 12" EVM, clean, distorted, in between. Sounded great to me, but then I love EV's.
http://magnatune.com/artists/albums/myles-marginal/ I have a pair of SRO's I'm going to put in a 2 x 12 cab, as soon as I build it.

Im not a big fan of EVM12L's with low wattage amps myself, it makes them sound less transparent and more sterile with only a handful of watts pushing them.

I Would use a extension cab if you decide to try one since tweed amps have thinner 1/4" baffles that are likely to get damaged by the extra weight of the EV.

Kind of. I have an Allen Brown Sugar that can run from tweed(ish) to blackface tones. The amp isn't a true tweed but it gets pretty close if you dial it in right. It's a 40 watt head with the current trannies and I really like the amp through the EV. I agree with 66Park that the classic tweed tone is in large part the speaker, but for my needs, the higher headroom sound that I get with the EV is more useful.

The con is it's a brutally honest speaker that made me precisely dial in my signal chain to get an ideal sound that was on the edge, one great sound only, and everything else had to be redialed to sound good again when I switched back to another speaker. Since I decided to keep the amp, I got rid of the EV's. I went all Webers, cuz the Webers have by far the smoothest sound with the 5E3 of any speaker I've had.

I just had a 1x12 open back tweed extension cab to go with my Richter Supra-Luxe (30w 2x6L6 version of 5E3). I like it a lot ... but EVM12L has been my favorite speaker since the early 80s. The Stormy Monday and Whipping Post jams were the 2x10 Emi 105 cab. The rest are EVM12L. Hope it helps.

That is kind of a stretch for me, too. 1/4" inch baffle? I've never seen any amp with a 1/4" baffle, never seen anything less than 1/2". Gonna have to see a photo with a ruler next to the baffle on that one......
