DD3 Problem

Hi

I just got a Boss DD3 on ebay, I've given it a quick whirl this evening and I found that the repeats are quite distorted! Is this normal? I thought the repeats on a Digital Delay woud be pristine? I plugged direct from guitar into the DD3 into my amp and played on the clean channel. I even tried a Marshall Bluesbreaker V1 in front of it but the repeats were still mushy sounding. Can anybody shed some light on this at all please?
Thanks
Greig

Well, it's definately not normal, the repeats should be prestine.

is it in front of the amp or in a loop?
not all loops take pedals well.

are you using amp distortion or is the amp set clean?
most digital delay pedals placed in front of a distorting amp sound like ass.

if the amp is set clean and the pedal is in front of the amp, then it sounds like there may be a problem with the pedal.

It's in front of the amp on the clean channel. I didn't think it was right! Is it worth opening it up and having a look at it? I've no idea what I'd be looking at but maybe i's worth a look?

I'm thinking not. Your best bet will be to return the pedal.

I have the same problem on one I got in a Craigslist swap (gave him a DD-6, hated the sound), anyways; When I plugged it in for a quick test, it worked fine, turned on a Swollen Pickle;fine, and old Guv'nor; fine. Later on i ran some preamp gain, and used my Fat Boost V1, and i got the crackling. It sounded like when you run a Carbon Copy @18V and can hear the degregation of the repeats on long repeat settings. I havent cracked it open to see what I can do to beef up the input, actually; I played it last night and kind of liked it. I could play w/clean signal, and even some overdrive/distortion/dirt and it stayed true, but once i kicked on the Fatboost, it had that crackle, but it sounded right with boosted Fuzz I was using. But it needs to be fixed because Im sure it'll get worse over time.

PS. I ran it on a Tweaker I use at the bench, which has an FX loop that runs in series. The kid I got it from swore it never messed up for him, he uses a Triple Rectifier which has a Loop that runs in parallel. I put it into the loop of another couple amps I have that have parallel fx loops, and line levels, and it didnt happen at all, no matter how much load i pushed through, but the loops work differnet. If you buy an external line level (or use the one on your amp if you have one) and you should be able to get it to work. Front of the amp/after the preamp, its not going to make a difference if your loop is in series.
