What are the bargains in "black face" combos <$800
I may be in a position to buy myself a treat in the next few weeks. Would be looking at a blackface style combo amp, <$800 and <45 lbs. 1x12 or 2x10 are fine. 15-25 watts is also fine.
I've seen the Alessandro Working Dog Rottweiler go $650 or so and have my eyes out for one of them but am wondering what other amps are likewise under the radar and therefore buying opportunities in this range and market?

One somewhat rare vintage amp to watch for is a non-reverb blackface Fender Deluxe. 22 watts or so, 35lbs, 1x12. Killer sounding amps that they only made for about 4 years, 64-67. A little less gainy then a reverb model, though I find the sweet spot on them is still under full crank so I've never missed the gain especially with pedals. As a bonus they are a little lighter and more compact (width wise) than a reverb model. I keep a "Wet" pedal on the pedalboard so that effect is nicely covered. I've owned 5 of these amps over the years, plus 2-3 reverb models, my preference somehow always coming back to the non-reverb ones. Seems they now fetch a somewhat high price (usually a grand or more) but still typically they sell well short of the price of a similar era reverb model. That said, keep an eye out for ones with "issues" and you can find a real deal. Things like replaced baffles, grills, back panels, or even stray panel holes here or there... Within the last several years I've found two of these amps (both '64s) for less than $500 each because they were missing speakers, back panels, regrilled, and/or needed a baffle board. Back panels and baffles are easy to get from Mojotone, and with many 12" speaker choices you can fine tune it to your needs. Other than the issues mentioned both of mine were 100% electrically original, only needing a PS cap job and 3 prong cord to gig. Maybe the days of finding these for under $500 are gone, but I bet you could find a road worn example in your price range if you are patient and don't mind a little fix up work. On the plus side, you will probably make money on one in the long run. My favorite speakers for these for several years had been the Weber 12F150, though I've recently really been loving a Celestion Alinico Gold in these amps. Here is a trio of '64s which by the way came stock without the Fender logo, though the slightly later era ones got the logos.
UPDATE: Just checked ebay and recently a quite decent looking original amp (possibly too nice looking) went for a little over $1k. Find one with a couple cosmetic issues, etc. and it should be within your budget. ![]()
