If the poll had been called "high-grossing, or super-popular rock guitarists", I'd say "Sure. Fine. Whatever."
But "greatest Guitarist Ever"? Where's: Joe Pass Wes Montgomery Tal Farlow Howard Alden Frank Vignola Grant Green Herb Ellis Bucky Pizzarelli etc., etc., etc.,

It has been debated ad nauseum since its printing. The author of this list has said, numerous times, that it was meant to not necessarily reflect technical ability (or else it would be filled with cats no one has heard of) but rather to reflect influence specifically on the genre of rock guitar. Additionally, he stated that like any list it was meant to be controversial and invoke discussion. Again, anytime you make a list like this someone will get upset that their favorite player is not on it, not high enough on the list, or some guy (who likely they have never heard of or have never listen to their work) beat out their favorite player.

I am going to guess Lonnie Johnson is not on this list? How about Otis Rush? No Wes? No Herb? come on now.

And collectively the music buying public says "who?" For a devils advocate approach, how many people picked up a guitar cause they heard Wes Montgomery v. how many picked up a guitar cause they heard Joey Ramone or Kurt Cobain? Just sayin. Honestly, I was surprised to see Robert Johnson on the list at all (in a good way).

I agree to a certain extent and I really do see the point, however there has to be a balance to this list. List should have read "most influential guitarist's" or something like that, oh well....
and I broke my promise to stop talking about this list years ago. ![]() Quote:
