Anyone ever eat dog?

I was at a Korean place in Boston yesterday and swear that they fed me dogmeat. But how would I know?

It didn't taste like cattle, pork or chicken, but it was a brownish meat, a little less gamier than venison.

I did have it once in 'Nam but it was because we were starving.

I don't think I'd consciously eat it.

I had roast dog as a "very special treat" at a formal banquet in China. Very good, fine grained brown meat, not very fatty at all. I would say less gamey than venison. It was good (I had 2nds).

Ever had horse? My mom had it everyday after WW2 was over, as she grew up in Germany. That was all there was. From time to time when we eat out, burgers or hot dogs, she swears that the meat she's eating is horse.

I do understand other places "normal" may not be the same as mine, but for me it's just wrong on every conceivable level.

Meh, I mean I am not for making dogs livestock, but some cultures revere cows, some revere dogs, some don't eat meat at all. I don't think we are in any place to judge considering how our meat is produced.

Considering how cheap beef is in the US, and how much work it takes to butcher an animal, I really doubt you ate dog meat.

My wife worked with a man who was originally from Hong Kong. Whenever he goes back, he crosses over to the mainland to a town where the restaurants specialize in dog meat. He says we're crazy for not eating it -- it's better than beef.

There are plenty of countries, like France, where horse meat is popular, today.

As a wise TGPer once said, Without even knowing the facts, I am sure this is true. Beef and Chicken are dirt cheap, why go to the hassle of butchering a dog? I have butchered my own deer, and let me tell ya, it is not all that easy, and it takes time, it would be much cheaper to just buy beef when you consider opportunity cost.

I ask because it didn't taste like beef and the waiter was laughing, speaking in Mandarin (I think) to the cook, and they were both making barking noises.

Really weird.

As a person fond of dogs as living creatures, I can understand why.

While dog is "meat" to many far eastern countries, it would not be considered acceptable in some western countries and, (while I haven't checked) may indeed contravene certain respective western countries human food laws.

Many far eastern meat is marinaded in soy(a) sauce and will darken the colour.

Pig farmer Willie Pickton, from Port Coquitlam (outside Vancouver) was convicted of serial murders. He claimed to have killed 49 women. During the police investigation, they asked the public to return any meat bought from his farm. Just sayin'...
