Peavey Classic 30 and 112E Question
Hi all,
I love TGP and have searched this question out, found some information but still not making total sense to me so I thought I'd ask.... I own a Classic 30, when I purchased the amp the speaker had been upgraded to a Celestion G12 Vintage 30. The speaker is an 8 ohm speaker, it had been modified to plug directly into the extension cab input. I think I understand why this was done, it's my understanding that the amp sees 8 ohms from that input. Well, I just came across the 112E cab on CL, and picked it up. The cab has the stock Peavey Sheffield speaker in it, which runs at 16 ohms. I'm interested in replacing this speaker with something that would compliment the Vintage 30. What I don't understand is what ohm rating the cab speaker should have....I'm looking at the Crex, etc. If anyone has any ideas of a speaker that would go well with the Vintage 30 that would also be great. I'm an at home player of blues, classic rock, etc. I'm looking for a full, good clean tone, and get most of my OD/distortion from pedals. Thanks much for any help you are able to offer..... l |

If you're going to use the extension cab, both speakers are supposed to be 16 ohms. Maybe you can get away with two 8 ohm speakers or a mismatch (one 8 and one 16) - hopefully someone else will chime in on that.

Thanks David....that's what I was suspecting, I'm wondering if I can get by with the mismatch and also if I need a 16 ohm speaker in the extension cab.

my advice would be put a greenback in the combo-and stick a blue marvel in the 112e, or if you could flip the 112e cause they're going for big dough on feebay, the buy a avatar 2x12 and stick that under the combo.

If you go with a 16 the load would be 5.33 ohms. Close enough for 8 ohm amp IMO. However the 8 ohm speaker will use 2/3's the power. Bob

Thanks guys, what a situation I'm in now
It sounds like I've got to either run only the solo 8 ohm Vintage 30 in the combo, plugged into the extension jack....or replace that speaker with a 16 ohm speaker, connect it to the original speaker wires. I would then be able to run the combo by itself or with the addition of the 112E(with a 16 ohm speaker). Is that right? After looking on fleabay, I have to admit I'm tempted to sell the cab for profit, convert the combo into a head, purchase an empty Avatar G212H, reuse the Vintage 30 8 ohm and purchase an G12H30 8 ohm or similar. Can the 212 cab run the two 8 ohm speakers in such a way that the amp sees the expected load, without a speaker connected to the amp (using the amp as a head only)? Thanks again |

What a horrible addiction this is...I have an epiphone valve jr with an eminence lady luck in it, it's a 16 ohm speaker. For now, I will swap that with the Vintage 30 that's in the classic 30. The valve jr can output 4, 8, or 16 ohm so I can put the Vintage 30 into that cab and run at 8 ohm without problems. Then, upgrade speakers as I can in the classic 30 and 122e, if I think it needs to be done. Thanks much for your help guys!
