Fredo was still betraying Michael in Cuba... that explains the soldiers

I don't think we got this cleared up in last month's thread (despite the topic being raised).

Michael told Fredo that Hyman Roth would be assassinated prior to his knowing that Fredo was the traitor. When Michael saw the soldiers going up to where Roth was sleeping, it must have been further confirmation that Fredo was the traitor (since Fredo must have told the authorities to watch out for an attempt on Roth's life... he certainly didn't tell Roth, since Johnny Ola was successfully assassinated).

So Fredo's betrayal wasn't just that one time, at the Corleone compound. Even after Fredo was reveling in how great it was to spend "brother" time with Michael (and lamenting that they hadn't done it much before), he was still intent on protecting Roth against Michael (just like in part 1, he kept taking sides against the family).

You equate arguably the greatest movie ever with some board game?

Ever? Certainly, you are correct to apply the caveat "arguably".

S.W., it comes up in that discussion as often as any movie, but no biggie. Whatever movie you name in that slot will have at least as many critics smirking at your choice. Are you going to bat for a particular movie or for the elimination of all "greatest ever" talk?

Trolls... did I cross a bridge or something? Am I supposed to pay some fee?

Hmmm, good observation. That makes perfect sense. I've seen that movie a LOT and never put that one together.

Fredo took parts with Hyman Roth and worked against his own family.
A sad person, he just wanted to feel like he was important, something he paid the ultimate price for later.

Wait, I thought that was Michael's bodyguard who got shot in Roth's hospital room. It was Johnny Ola??

Hulk confused.

No it WAS Michael's bodyguard (the guy who strangled Ola a little bit before going to Roth's room). Fredo told the authorities to watch for an attempt on Roth's life. If he had told Roth (who then told the authorities), Ola prob wouldn't have been a sitting duck (for that matter, Roth wouldn't have been, either... the soldiers got there just in time... in fact, maybe that means that Fredo told the authorities while they were at the New Years party).

A man, such as Fredo, needs to know his place in the world. A man's gotta know his limitations.
