I dunno. The Lollars sound pretty righteous to me as did the stock pups only far less squealing if any with very high gain with my Soldano SLO and modded Lucky13. I'm only trying other pups out of curiosity.

I think he used a pretty wide variety of stuff, this site has a lot of great info on his Deluxes and a bunch of other stuff too:

Those 70s Gibson LP deluxes kerrang like on Who Are You (the video in the studio). Whether he recorded it with the Gretsch is not clear- but in the video of that song taken in the studio he features the LP quite often for those crispy slicing power chords and my LP Dlx completely copped that tone. However, they squealed like a banshee and really weren't all around players. Lollar said he'd pot them for me for a nominal charge, and I considered doing it but dropped a set of his mini's in. The neck mini I had was good, but the bridge pickup was pretty spanky. Here is some clam filled wanking with the guitar once the Lollars were in it...

Back in '69 my dad got a goldtop for me. But like a jerk, in my college days I traded it away. 'Always missed it. Then I found this '93 and fell in love again.
Does anyone one else have the problem of the bridge pickup sitting tilted toward the bridge?

It's an issue with the way some are mounted. If you have that problem, I found that a little shim between the pickup surround and the body will tilt it how you like. I take a bit of electrical tape, fold it over itself so there is no sticky exposed, then slide it in. Because it's black, it's nearly invisible if you make sure none sticks out.

I love your LP Signature, by the way. Always wanted one.

I wonder how much of it can be attributed to the cover and the poles - on mine the poles are pretty loose in their sockets even though I have them sunk flush with the tops of the covers.

Mine're flush but pretty tight. The squealing happens most when I kick a Tonebender Mk II type pedal at above drummer volume.

So it must be in the coils then.

I can kill the whistling/squeals by dialing back my Tone controls, and being as it is a lefty and the pots are wired righty the taper bunches up at the 2-3 positions so it's easy to find the right settings to squelch it. It would be nice to not have to think about it though.

Maybe getting them potted isn't such a bad idea after all.
