New Albums and Vinyl Releases

Just a thought here, see what you think:

We all keep hearing about how vinyl is making a comeback, and more and more bands these days opt to release their albums on multiple formats (CD, Vinyl, MP3). My thought is this:

I think that when you buy an album on vinyl, it should come with a dropcard inside that provides a code by which you can download a digital copy of the same record for free.

Then you get the best of both worlds. I would pay $5 more per vinyl for that, but if you tack on $10, then I may as well just buy the vinyl then buy the digital album on iTunes.

Any thoughts?

I like your thinking. But, I could sell my card on ebay for a small profit, no?

Yeah, but that's the thing, why bother? The best you could get for it would be the price of the album on iTunes I would think. Plenty of artists already use the dropcard method for pre-release sales, and it seems to work out.

I dunno, just thinking out loud....

A lot of new releases do this - I just got the new Radiohead on vinyl and it came with a download code. For me it's the best of both worlds, the romance of old-school vinyl and the convenience of mp3. And it was $15. Well worth it, for me.

I've bought multiple modern vinyl albums that have done this very thing.

That's already pretty common. Digital downloads are often included with a new vinyl and are a big bonus for buying them.

Every new album can be downloaded illegally for free, so providing the card to purchasers of vinyl is a courtesy gesture. While vinyl sales have been growing in the last few years, the number of sales on any single new title is miniscule, so there's not much added cost to the record label to offer that service.

Tons of bands are doing this already. It's a pretty common thing. The vinyl is around $20, and you get a code for the mp3s as well.

Like others have said, this is pretty common. I think they should do something similar with book so you can download them on your Kindle or other e-reader.

Interesting to hear that this is already a common practice....guess I need to get after the bands I enjoy, because they aren't doing it yet.
