Removing Duct Tape Residue from body of guitar

Hello all,

Got a friend who just bought a semi-hollow type on the cheap in a local deal. Only issue with the guitar is that it has a lot of duct tape residue on the back of the body of the guitar. (See picture below. It's not the best quality, but gives a general idea of what he's working with.)

Suggestions for how to remove this stuff without taking off the finish or damaging the guitar are most appreciated!

Thanks for the redirect. Didn't see that one earlier when I did a search. Will do a little further reading on Goo Gone for sure.

No problem. It's cheap and available at most stores. It's always worked for me with tape/sticker residue. It works fast.

I would NOT use goo gone unless you KNOW it would not harm the finish, ( I would not)

Lighter fluid (naphtha) is generally safe for a nitro finish

What if it's an older guitar and the nitro is checking? Is there more of a danger in the fluid damaging the wood under the finish?

I agree if it's a Nitro finish. I've only used Goo Gone on Poly finishes. Sorry, I wasn't thinking about it being Nitro.
Good luck.

I've used Naptha with success, so +1 on that. But I would try it on an inconspicuous area first. Let the Naptha do the work. You shouldn't have to do much rubbing.

I'm assuming they sell this stuff at a hardware store in a smaller size?

You can also buy it at the drug store. I bought my last bottle at Walgreens. It is sold as lighter fluid (Ronsinol, etc.) with the tobacco products.

Naptha works but I'd try to get my hands on a bottle of 99.99% isopropyl alcohol first. Usually a safer bet on not doing damage to finishes or anything else. Get it from an electronics supply house (mouser/digikey etc) or maybe a local pharmacy.

Big bottle will last for a long time and is highly useful for all sorts of other stuff... I sometimes mark gear with a paint pen (settings) and one swipe of an alcohol rag takes the stuff right off.
