Crowther Hotcake

Do they even make these anymore? I want one of the new ones with the two switches inside but can't find one for sale anywhere.

I actually sold my one and only Hotcake to Brad from Tone Factor back in 2002. True story.

Thanks, I don't know how I missed Tonefactor, it's usually the first place I look.

Anyone still using the Hotcake? Tell me about it.

Love mine also. I have a newer one with the bluesberry option and sounds awesome with my vox. It gets a little muddy if you have the gain up too high but sounds awesome for medium gain.

Hot Cake is great! I've had one for the last 3 years. It's the latest model with internal switches. With Fender blackface type amps it's a love/hate thing for me, but with my AC30 it's pure love. I also liked it with '57 Deluxe RI.

I like it best when the drive knob is between 9am and 1pm, I'm not much of a high gain guy.

My desert island OD.

AB'd it against: Timmy, SHO, Eternity, and a Honey Bee at a corporate gig (2x50 minute sets) the other night, and reconfirmed my thoughts that it is by far the best overdrive for me.

Play a Tele thru a deluxe reverb.

Love mine. Used it tonight. Agree with the comments about the drive getting too heavy at extreme settings, but it's just right for me with these settings:

Vol at 1 o'clock
Presence at 3 o'clock
Drive at 11 o'clock

Hotcake cleans up so well, from full on OD to as clean as your bypassed tone with the volume knob . I like to keep the drive at 10-12 too, how you set it's volume knob is important too as it's a good when slightly boosting the amp's front end.

Just ordered mine from Paul with the mid lift switch instead of the presence knob to match with my new amp which is incoming. The amp builder told me to go with that, but I don't know whether there's much of a difference between the knob and the switch. Oh well, we shall see.

I have one with the switch, but I needed to be able to choose something between the two extremes with my setup. With the presence set to 'on' it was a bit too bright and loud (almost like a treble booster) with the volume set to where I wanted it. I think it would work well if you left it on all the time and liked what it did, but it wasn't quite the thing for single coils and a Swart Space Tone. I bought one with the presence knob and it suits me much better... if the toggle switch had a middle position it would have been fine!

The switch must be better for specific situations, otherwise it wouldn't be offered as an option. Maybe I can make it a selling point when I move my old one on... hmm..

I play a tele and strat with stock pickups through Fender 6V6 amps. FWIW, I hated the OCD and love Timmy and Screwdriver.

Strats, 6v6 amps, Timmy (or Tim)... yep. The Hotcake will feel familiar in that it can be set so that you can't hear any difference whether it's on or off, and there is still plenty of travel in either direction on the knobs. Once you start adding it in, though, it has a very different character to the Timmy. Well worth having both.

Yep, thinking of pairing it with a Timmy - heard it sounds pretty great together!

Hmm..there is a lack of good clips of the Hotcake, Burgs did a reasonably good one, but I only could find one video of the Hotcake w a Vox amp.

mondo500 (Mike) - you've got a pm!
