TC Nova System Users - Boost question...
I got a Nova System on Saturday and I'm really happy with it. Sounds great, integrates into my setup perfectly and offers me a lot of versatility. I have a question regarding the boost however, and how when it's off the system attenuates the signal down the boost amount (say 6dB) then releases it when you hit the switch, thus losing a bit of high end. At first I thought it was acting as a gain boost rather than a clean volume boost but then I realised it was actually dulling the tone a bit and lowering the gain from the Riot that sits before it, making it feel hotter when the boost was enabled.
I'll basically copy and paste what I put on the TC forum (I thought I'd post here too since traffic is pretty slow over there...) "If I have the boost set up for say 6dB but switched off, there is a noticeable jump in high frequencies when it's turned on. Tone sounds duller with the boost off. This is normal, right? Basically to fix it, in the patches where I'm not using the boost, I turned the boost down to 0dB and it seemed to bring the brightness back. Is this the fix or is there another way around it?" Played with it for a bit then posted this; "OK, I've just also noticed a bit of weirdness with this. Say you have two patches, a rhythm sound on patch 1 and a lead sound on patch 2. If you set the boost amount to 0dB but the boost OFF on patch 1 and the boost amount to 6dB and the boost ON in patch 2, it works fine. It acts as a volume boost and all is well. However, if you then switch the boost ON in patch 1 and try to switch to patch 2, there is then no volume jump. It's like it forgets the boost amount for some reason? The only fix for this is to go back into the boost settings for patch 2, turn the wheel, set it back to where you were and it remembers. Then you're cool as long as you don't accidentally hit the boost in a patch you don't wanted boosted!! Does anybody have a workaround for this? I want to keep my tone as clear and pure as possible on the unboosted patches but still have the ability to boost on lead patches. I can't go through a gig hoping I don't hit the boost by mistake!" Sorry for the giant wall of text but does anybody know of a fix? |

Hey there, check out this site and the video tutorials.
http://www.tcelectronic.com/novasystemvideo.asp See the how to set input and output levels and the other videos then go to the preset page and check out Pete thorn's settings as a nice place to start tweaking the tone and output. Good luck! |

The boost on the Nova System reminds me a lot of the boost on my Box of Rock, which does something similar you're describing. I don't notice any attenuation with my Nova System, but I recheck it when I get home from work.

Thanks dude. I have the input and output set where I want them, it's just this boost thing. I've found a work-around however for the thing about the boost de-activating. I think anyway.
