Question Cheaper R9 Substitute?

I've always wanted a '59 reissue Gibson Les Paul, but I just can't justify the going price of a new, hell even a used one!

So what would be a cheaper substitute? Standard? Classic?

The R8s tended to have somewhat plain tops, but the older ones definitely had some flame. As far as the best guitar for the money, and R7 is hard to beat - you give up the burst top, but the playability and tone is about the same for less money.

Since 2003, all R7s, R8s, R9s, and R0s are the same guitar with different neck profiles. R7s having the fattest necks, then R8s, then R9s, with R0s having the slimmest necks. R9s/R0s are supposed to get the lighter mahogany but that's not always the case and you often see R8s that are lighter than some R9s. The only other difference is R0s also have double ring tuners and reflector tone/volume knobs.

sweet.

If your price range is lower try Japanese LPs or Gibson Classics or standards that look like R9s. Try some Heritages that look like R9s. My Heritage H-157 had a natural flame that almost naturally looked burst-like, similar to an R9. To save money you will have to look around. and fight the crowd

A used R7, R8 and G0 will do quite nicely.

Don't forget about the flamed tops on the R0 and R9, THE reason for the upcharge.

Also, if you want a flame top, a used Chambered R8 would be an option.
