New original: "Some Friends Of Mine"

I certainly do not know much about recording. This was done, one track, using the onboard stereo mics, me playing live on my Gibson Gospel. A handheld Tascam DR-05 is about a foot from my mouth as I sing/play. I import into Kristal free software, boost volume, tweak eq slightly, add a bit of reverb, compression, limiting. Sounds good to me. What do you think of this sound quality? Is this good enough for a low budget self-done cd of originals? Or do you think I could get a lot better sound with multi-tracking, using better mics? I have quite a few mics, just never use them, as I never got serious with it because I could get decent sound out of these small recorders.

This particular track, for some reason, the beginning overall volume was low and I thought all was lost but I boosted compression / limiting more than usual and it sounds pretty good to me. To a good ear, it might suck.

And any comments about the song, good or bad, are welcome. I am a "serious" songwriter, used to rejection, ready to do my first album. This song happens to be true, I sang it at the funeral of the man I am singing about. I'd like to get feedback from people who don't know him (or me).

I also could go to a studio and get a real pro to record me.

Thanks for any feedback.

Probably best to multi-track it. You've got a big voice, but it sounds way too out front compared to the guitar, and that's the problem with just one track.

Beautiful music. Sounds much better than I expected given your description of the recording process. For the style of music, I think it works very well. A multi-track recording would give you a lot more options down the road but the current setup certainly gives a quite acceptable result, in my opinion. Let me know when you release your CD, I'll buy it.
