would you agree or disagree if i said a slayer solo tends to sound like mayhem on a completely out of tune guitar and played by a guitarist who isnt giving 2 shits about what he is playing, where he is playing it on the neck and no regard for whether it fits the song ?

i believe 101% that a slayer guitar solo lacks everything.

if you had dave lombardo on drums banging out a 200bpm rhythm and araya on bass , the above clip is what a slayer solo sounds like on top of it all

Here's the test - rerecord all of slayers solos and see if you can do better.

But what would "better" sound like?

Yes they sound like mayhem, they're supposed to. Who cares about tone or playing something melodic? Slayer's trying to evoke an atmosphere and the wild, out of key, chaotic solos help do just that.

anybody can play out of tune, out of key, with no melody ,no phrasing and no passion. just listen to somebody who has been playing for 3 weeks and has the same sense of soloing melody that slayer do.

dont get me wrong, i love slayer rhythmically and vocally, but those "solos" ,jeez talk about ruining the whole thing

the solos are lolz. I just listen to the drums. Put Marty Freidman in Slayer and they would destroy

It would be interesting to take a Slayer progression and let other lead players take a stab at composing a solo for it.

You could hear what Marty Friedman would do with it, and Alex Skolnick, and Kirk Hammett, and Dave Mustaine, Paul Gilbert, Steve Vai, Laiho, whoever.

Um, it's Slayer. I don't think anybody comes to Slayer looking for something that has melody, is tuneful, tasteful, or has nice "phrasing."

Ive told it before but Kerry and I took lessons from the same guy though at different times.

It works for them as the guitar players in Slayer.

I am all about metal, and never been a giant fan of Slayer, especially the solos. Lombardo is a beast though. Kerry King did the guitars on Beastie Boys License to Ill too. Same label, both done by Rick Rubin.

If the solos ruin Slayer for you I can't say you really get Slayer.

Slayer would be so much better if they sung about rainbows, unicorns and love. I mean the riffage is brutal excellence, but when they start talking about satanic rituals and flesh melting off people it just really turns me off.

But just think of the sheer terror you would feel when you put on that new Slayer record and they were singing about unicorns. That might be the scariest thing they could possibly do.
