The margin is still better on any other tech consumer electronic device.
The used market for Axe-fx products wasn't inflated, it was exactly what the market would support. Cliff makes a great product that is in limited supply and people are willing to pay close to new prices for a used unit. Over the last year and a half I've seen used Ultras selling for anywhere between 1600 and 2200. When they aren't in stock the used prices goes up but when they are in stock the used prices drops a bit. I fully expect to see the used market stabilize pretty quickly once the new units start shipping.

I've had my Ultra for about a year and a half and MY only concern with the release of the Axe II is whether or not Cliff will continue to release firmware updates for the current (older) hardware. Even if there were to be no functional upgrades it would be nice to know that Cliff was committed to resolving any bugs or issues.

However, if I HAD purchased my Ultra a couple of weeks before the countdown I would be a little pissed and would expect an offer to upgrade to the Axe II.

Do you have any idea how many new models Marshall has released since they made my Plexi or how many Fender released since they made my Deluxe reverb? LOL
Well - I called Marshall on your behalf and they've agreed to do the 84 hardware upgrades FREE to your Amp- the bad news - it's going to weigh 426 pounds.......

My advice would be to buy the Axe Fx 2 as soon as it's available ( sell the house, the car wife, kids..whatever u need to sell to get the $$..lol) this way you get to use it for a very long time, and won't feel so bad when the Mk III comes out, or worry how much less it's worth..

Really? They are pissed because the resale value on a piece of used equipment has gone down? What kind of unrealistic expectations did they have? Should Cliff have not come out with something new just to satisfy the used market value of a few? Really? It seems totally silly to be pissed that the value of used equipment dropped. Hello, McFly, thats how things work. In fact it is SO common someone even invented a word for it. Its called "depreciation"! Hopefully (since I have not read the thread) they are perhaps dissapointed that they now have to live in the reality of most used gear, but not actually pissed?

It reminds me of this skit from The Onion Movie on the Bates 4000 computer:

Sure, but there is a HUGE difference in not making something upgradable because of software issues, and something not being upgradable because older hardware simply won't support it. You just can't get around it. Anyone that blames Cliff for utilizing newer faster technology because the older stuff is too slow should probably be running Windows95.

Its ridiculous to expect someone trying to run a business and push the envelope to stay stagnant and not move ahead with the technology. Businesses do this constantly. Lead, follow, or get out of the way. Cliff clearly wants to lead. Good for him.

So, how many people sued Line6 when the Vetta came out?

Now this I can understand. Not law suit worthy, but if I had just bought an Ultra for $2000 and then a week or two later found out that the Ultra II was coming I would be upset since Cliff knew and didn't let me know. You can bet if I were still within the 15 day trial it would be sent back immediately. I mean, its business and it happens, and sometimes it sucks, and if I found out on day 16 that I could have had a next generation for only $100 or $200 or so more if I had just known or waited a very brief amount of time, I would FIRST talk to Cliff. I would appeal to his sense of fairness and see what he could do for me. But then again, Cliff HAS to draw the line somwhere, and he can't simply announce the new one weeks before it ships and then risk a sudden income of $0 until it ships. A company with a broad product range can afford that, but a small business cannot. Its tough, and it does suck for a few, but sometimes sh*t happens.

At least they weren't told they had malignant cancer or something. Some people have it far worse.

Really, some jack@$$ wants to sue Cliff for unveiling a new product and you think I'm out of line for saying people are bitter and silly? Whatever. Think what you want of me. I really don't give a sh!t.

Actually, one of them was. I just sold one for an INSANE amount of money, the only one I bought as an investment. Success.

One was a gift from my wife for an anniversary. The others I enjoy and play the sh!t out of. So yeah, those aren't investments and I really don't care what they are worth. I enjoy them. I don't worry about the value of my current guitars when PRS, Thorn, Suhr, or anyone else I own comes out with something new. Because I didn't buy them as investments. I bought them to play.

Funny thing is, my wife is more than supportive of my music and my passion for gear. I've never had to justify any gear purchase. In fact, she has bought me a boutique tube amp, my first PRS, my R Taylor, and all sorts of other cool sh!t.

Same goes with the Axe.

I just got an email from a guy who bought one on April 1st who wants to return it. I couldn't find any order associated with his email address. When I asked for his order number he said "I bought it on eBay".

Hey, so what are the ridiculous low prices for the Ultra now? I mean if I can unload my Std for say $1300 on eBay to someone who either does nto know or does not care about the II version ($1300 is, or was, a fair value), and then in a month or two pick up a used Ultra for $1500, that would be sweet!

Then I just have avoid all of the Axe II threads so I don't GAS for it. Thats what I did with the Ultra.

And I need to figure out what to do for gear while waiting on the Ultra price drops.

I was gonna buy an X3Live for both a backup and MIDI pedal, but I was never able to sell my ToneLab SE to finance the purchase....

Apparently people in the know indicate the Ultra should land around $800-1000 and the Standard will be around $400-500 in due time. Soon the POD HD will be worth more than the Standard so I wouldn't wait too long to sell...

When the dust settles, as I understand the Ultra and standard are discontinued, the price drop might not be significant at all. But it seems inevitable that everyone who received their shipment of an Ultra in the last two weeks will be returning it within the two weeks return period to get the AXE II. So will fractal set a price for the returned items or they won't be sold?
