Anyone have Teak Patio Furniture?
I was looking at a new patio set at the local wholesale warehouse kind of place, but the set I liked was discontinued. I went somewhere else and discovered some nice looking Teak sets. Anyone here own a teak patio set? Leave it outdoors all year? Does it require much maintenance?

teak should require no maintenance, if I could have afforded it I would love a teak deck! I have a table made out of teak but I keep it inside.

I have a teak coffee table and some chairs. If you can afford it go for it. It should outlive you.

Teak is real expensive and real hard to work but it is beautifull and it has tons of natural oil that makes it ideal for outdoor use. If it's real teak I say go for it.

I like the idea of teak, but I don't want to contribute to the deforestation of rain forests.
Sorry to be a bleeding heart, but I really like orangutans.

Quote:
The vast majority of commercially harvested teak is grown on teak plantations found in Indonesia and controlled by Perum Perhutani (a state owned forest enterprise) that manages the country's forests. The primary use of teak harvested in Indonesia is in the production of outdoor teak furniture for export. Teak consumption raises a number of environmental concerns, such as the disappearance of rare old-growth teak. However, its popularity has led to growth in sustainable Plantation Teak production throughout the seasonally dry tropics in forestry plantations. The Forest Stewardship Council offers certification of sustainably grown and harvested teak products. Propagation of teak via tissue culture for plantation purposes is commercially viable.[11]

it's heavy as hell and turns silvery grey...it's not super comfortable because it's soooo dense and hard. gotta have cushions.
I like it, but there are negatives. I don't leave it out all winter - but I do need to scurb it a bit at the beginning and end of the season. It's not really maintenance free. I bought a "good brand". |

I believe today most Teak is harvested from plantations so no illegal deforestation is occurs. If you want quality furniture look to see how the wood is Joined. That is where you have quality furniture. If it is joined properly it should last forever. The teak will turn a silver/gray color after years in the outdoors.

No, kitchen furniture. My wife found the table and 6 chairs in a thrift store years ago. Got the set for $100. The chairs finally broke down a year or so ago but the table is still very nice.

If it's harvested in a good way, I'm all for it. I'd definitely need some sort of proof before I purchased, though.
