They opened for the Dead and Allman Bros at RFK stadium June of '73. The crowd was enthusiastic despite the heat.

They weren't bad, never got too excited about them. I remember seeing this on Don Kirschner's Rock Concert. Here's Little Willie John's Grits Ain't Groceries (man, that female singer is unbelievably cute):

Curious if Donna Hall was the background singer on the version I heard this morning

I opened (I served no purpose whatsoever) for Jimmy Hall/Jack Pearson once and that particular show Jimmy gave everything he had and then some. The audience was screaming for more at end - Jimmy looked over and mouthed 'I am worn out'. I have not seen many people give that much to an audience. Seen him a bunch of times but that particular night he just gave his entire being to the audience. Phenomenal

Drippin Wet is one of the greatest live rock and roll records ever recorded...Airport, Shout Bama Lama, Caught the Kady, etc. They were raw and funky. Saw Jimmy a few years back at the Oasis in B'ham,AL with a pickup group and he still brought it. I always thought Ricky Hirsch got a great sound on this album and contacted him. This and YaYas were always a great sound--similar but dif. Turns out they were both using Ampegs. I bought a v4 and realized why they quit using them. Waiting untio you are at 2045 dbs to get your tone is pretty unpracticeable.

I saw them blow Lynyrd Skynyrd off the stage at the Saratoga Perf. Arts Ctr in 1975 ... they were terrific and it was probably one of the worst LS shows ever (the only one I saw, that was enough) based on other reports that they didn't often suck live, lol.
Jimmy Hall is still around and is a great blues singer (among other things)...

Big Jimmy Hall fan. Check him out with The Mighty Jeremiahs (w/ Greg Martin). The boy can still sing up a storm.

Love WW myself too, very under appreciated band. They had such a cool mix of influences and J Hall... boy can sing and front.
Wow. Used a V-2 in the late '70s and one was too much for me. |

Auburn. Drove up especially to see him. I think he works with Hank Williams, Jr. now as a sort of musical director.
As for the Ampegs, I also had a V2 in this era of tone searching. I called it the million dollar amp. Gave around $300 for the head and probably spent that much times three getting it fixed over and over. Very loud amps. |
