I prefer fender amps. I have a sound in mind...

If Money is no object. Here is what im looking for:

Plug straight in and get a ton of dynamics off the guitqrs controls. At max, not much gain. Full and defined with nuancey string noise and all that. I play a gretsch. Somewhere soundwise between setzer qnd johnny marr. Open sounding as possible.

Blackface super? Is that what im looking at here.

I played a tonemaster piggyback years ago. Those are hard to find now. Is there a vintage fender close to it?

Twin Reverb maybe? Doesn't Setzer run Showmans, or Bassmans? It's all out there for the taking.

Setzer plays blonde 6G6-B bassmans.
To me...you sound like you are describing a Twin Reverb. I pick the twin over the super because a super reverb will break up at around 4 on the volume knob. You said, "at max, not much gain", I figure that youre talking about max volume?

Clarification: Guitar on Max, Amp on Max, or both?

A Twin Reverb on Max will be deafening. Trust me. But it will still be very, very clean.

Even a Super Reverb maxed is very loud. Good for stages, not for home use. Will gain up early though, so will be pretty dirty by the time you get to max if you can play it that loud.

Yeah, Setzer is in the Bassman camp.

I think they both sound good at reasonable volumes (home) and even better at stage volumes (not maxed necessarily).

Menatone Dirty Blonde or Red Snapper > Blackface Fender with enough headroom to stay clean.

YMMV.

Or go Brownface Pro/Concert/Bassman. You'll loose some sparkle but get more grunt and punch.

for setzer you need an amp with more mids-he uses a blonde bassman( ss rectified)set on 5
most black faced fenders -vibroverb- super reverb-twin
and a zinky design-dual professional-great cleans does not break up ,has abit of the blonde tone too, loud as you want

Anywhere you can try any of these amp out to see what gives you the closest to what you want to achieve without buying? There are shops like Killer Vintage in St Louis that have probably every amp you are asking about or close to it. I know not every vintage shop does but they have loads of vintage guitars and amps. Looking for the golden combination in that scenario and talking to the guys in that shop who have seen and played these amps and guitar combos would be easier or at least more direct than buying and trying different things out. Another option is a vintage guitar show with a bunch of vendors selling a lot of vintage amps.

Pro Reverb & Vibrolux Reverb together with vintage tubes.
