I would start by rolling off some treble picking with fingers. Then light tremolo into a phaser. Pick out the artifical octave at the top of chords to get that shimmer. Maybe a tiny touch of octavia too

i think the amp type is important and probably the pups. slightly microphonic pups and an amp that tends to feedback in a pleasing way. lots of control in both hands. that's probably not helpful, sorry.

The rarest and coolest would the little floppy plastic insert record that came with Keyboard magazine for a Rhodes demo. Herbie plays some music that he says is from the Death Wish soundtrack. I have the CD and there isn't anything as funky as that little demo record.

And here it is. Don't mind the wow and flutter. If you didn't grow up with records you probably haven't heard much wow and flutter.

man I've been wondering about this for years..like how do you make a guitar sound like this but in a natural way...like...the guitar version of a rhodes...not...put it through a synth. I found maybe putting a les paul through a suhr badger 30 kinda has a certain characteristic...but not really...I'm not sure yet...maybe one day

Some of my favorite Herbie w/ Rhodes is on Joe Henderson's Power To The People. If you don't know it - check it out ASAP!

IMO, the only way is to actually buy a Fender Rhodes...

Even the digital emulations of a Rhodes don't quite make it, so a guitar has no chance - even a MIDI one playing samples. (Imagine a keyboard player trying to get his instrument to sound like a Les Paul, or a Martin . Forget it. That's why we have different instruments.)

Maybe so ... but I don't think that dialing in that kind of hard Rhodes 'attack' is all that impossible on a guitar ...
When in fact, Herbie used a lot of 'guitar' effects to get it ..

BTW, great sig quote line ...
