Lets talk 15" ers

Tell me why its a bad idea for the small venue gigging/rehearsing guitarist to have only one 15" speaker at his disposal. What will i be missing out on going from say an 8" speaker? Does a 15" beam more or less like a 12"? will your bassist hate you?

Im trying to find an amp and this is one issue that keeps coming back.

I love 15 inchers, but I've read (all other things being equal) that the bigger the speaker, the more it beams high frequencies. Anyone smart enough to explain or dismiss that?

12" has become the standard for a reason, it's the most balanced.

On the other hand, 15s do have their fans, especially with steel & jazz guitarists.

Hmm i thought the larger the speaker the weaker the highs would be but if steel players use them than they must be capable of some serious treble.

My 15" Vicky has all the treble I ever needed. And FWIW, I put a beam blocker in it, although I don't know if it was really necessary.

If it is in a small'ish cab that doesn't have a lot of extra space in it, AND you are running a 6L6 amp that has large transformers, AND you mismatch the impedence down a few ohms, they sound better than almost any other speaker I've tried. It also depends on what kind of sound you're going for. Marshall-y higher gain stuff, you're better off with Celestion ceramics. But, clean Fender type sound with lighter od, they are fantastic. Oh, and this is all regarding one particular speaker, which I find to be just wonderful. The old JBL D130F reconed in hemp fiber material by A. Broun Sound. I tout these killer speakers in pretty much every 15" speaker thread. They are quite expensive, but deliver like no other.

I've wondered why Eminence hasn't created a 15" version of the 12" Cannabis Rex. That would be cool.

A 15" guitar speaker is quite the projector and will pretty much blow everything else off the stage at 30 feet.

An Altec or JBL is killer tone but you need to be aware that it might kill in line of fire....put a plexiglass shield in front of it to disperse and/or block the sound.

My VVT Lindy Fralin 1x15 combo sounds great, not too bassy, nice mids, articulate highs, beautifully voiced bright switch. Eminence Legend ceramic magnet speaker, built-in diffuser on the baffle.

Let your ears be the judge. I've preferred a 1x15 to a 1x12 for years. The big decision for me is between 1x15 and 2x12 ... both have their virtues, both formats sound great.

Eminence's JBL clone is the Commonwealth, and they make it in 15". Rated 225 watts. I've got one in my 1x15, have about 40 hours on it--and still not convinced it's broken in yet.

What is the D130f rated for as far as wattage?

Kind Regards,
