Let me know when you find it.

Being silly once in a while can be fun.

And we all have been overdosed by people who smother us with pics of their offsprings. I've been invited by many colleagues - and I have turned down their offers. Hence.

When TGP gets as big as Facebook is - then I'll be concerned.
So why cant people just ignore the stuff on facebook they dont like, like they do on tgp? and I dont care if there are a billion people on facebook, as far as I am concerned there are only ~250 people that I have friended, and in that regard, TGP is much bigger because I have to put up with 60k knuckleheads on here.

Still dont understanding bitching about social media via social media. Facebook, like TGP, is what you make of it, it is highly customize-able and can be made to fit whatever role in social media you want it to. I don't sign in daily, rather I check in occasionally to get in touch with someone, I never really even look at the news feed, it is easy to avoid, and like Pat said, you can remove people from your feed.

Wrong.

Does everyone on Facebook play guitar, or have advice on the gear I might be buying? If they did - I might be on there, and not here.

You are really trying to miss the point.

The point is they are both forms of social interaction that dont involve face to face interaction and can link together people who may or may not have ever met in person. They both involve people sharing their experiences and opinions with others, many of whom might be strangers. The fact that one deals with guitar and one is more general is not really the point. Otherwise, why not bitch about a knitting forum, I mean, I dont knit so I have no use for it. Or how about a plumbing forum? the whole idea is that it is just another form of communication and social interaction.

But, on one hand we are all here for gear. On the other hand, you didn't pick/choose all of these people to be "your friends". There are 60,000 or so people on TGP so clearly you're going to get annoying threads, posts, etc. That's part of what makes TGP great & a pain the ass at the same time.

I just don't see how somebody you don't know or don't care about posting pics of new gear or "it's out for delivery" threads is in anyway like a FB friend. It's on topic here, you just didn't choose that person as your friend or care about their topic. On FB, you choose your friends & some of them frankly just act like idiots (or are maybe just annoying) there. This doesn't mean they're annoying in real life... as many take on an entirely different personas when on FB &/or TGP.

But, the comparisons you seem to be drawing between the two... I really don't get that. It's like apples & oranges. Annoyances are everywhere.
I agree that annoyances are everywhere. With either Facebook or TGP I can control what I do or don't want to see. With TGP there are 60k anonymous people and an occasional thread pops up that I'm interested in and will read and/or participate in. Things I find annoying I ignore. (I don't really use the ignore list- that was just part of the "comparison" metaphor.)

With Facebook I actually have only about 30 people on my friends list but we are close friends and I do know them and care about them. Very rarely does anything get annoying. I do hide games and every once in a while will hide a post but rarely is that needed. If someone was annoying enough I suppose I could pop them off the list but it hasn't come to that. In any case, I don't have teenage friends that talk about the lint balls in their navels and I don't have to deal with anonymous people hiding behind handles and etc. The conversation is pretty much what we're all interested in.

My only point is that with Facebook or TGP, you are in control of your environment. You can determine the experience you want to have. Not every web site is for everyone, TGP or Facebook- I get that. But the continuous whining about stuff (at either place) that you can easily control is a waste of time- and you have no one to blame but yourself.

Don't you think there's validity to both side of this?

Personally, I think there's a bunch of substantial differences between TGP & FB in everything from structure, "friendships", anonymity/privacy, the typical use/flow of both sites, etc.

I am able to much more easily manage TGP, which is why I'm here & only lasted 3 weeks on FB. This is like a massive & well organized (by category) wall (or group) on FB.

Some people put really cool stuff on Facebook, the trick is to have "friends" with similar interests.

Check out this video that Melvin Gibbs just posted 12 minutes ago of him playing with Bill Frisell. I never would have seen this if we weren't connected on Facebook.

I just ignore the "I just had my morning coffee" people.

I'm just the opposite.

I have over 500 "friends" but the vast majority of them are musicians, photographers, or fashion models (I'm also a freelance photographer) so I use it for networking much more than communicating with my "real friends" who I'll just email or call (yes...how antiquated) if I want to speak with them.

Well stated. That's what I was driving at, and I should have just said as much.

Yep. TGP is already customised to what I want.

Maybe most of the inane stuff on FB is just put on there because people feel they have to do something to justify their presence.
You know, the "I don't really have any use for this thing, but now that I've got it, I'm finding uses for it" scenario.

It was like this with mobile phones in the early stages, so I'll have another look at FB in about 5 or 10 years. I would use it for business purposes though.

I guess if you're going to jail for life you might as well go out with a bang.
