What speaker is closest to an EV12L?
A Weber Michigan or an Eminence Swamp Thing?

I don not know but I love the EV12L so much that I found one used on eBay about two years ago to put in my Mark IV....proably no real subsitute - in fact, a friend mine with several boutique amps, recently showed me a brand new EV12L that he found on the internet....

Eminence Delta Pro. A bit more open in the upper mids and sweeter on top. Somewhat less hi-fi but very close. This is EMI's take on the EV12L but ends up halfway between a 12L and an SRO.

I have an old 15" Eminance in my '64 Vibroverb and think it sounds more like my EV 12" than any of my Celestions ... if that helps.

If you like the sound of the EVM12L speaker, you should get the real one. It's not a problem to find them on eBay.
On the other hand, Weber speakers are great and lighter than the EVs. |

To my ears the Delta Pro is very close to an EV without the laser beam high end that EVs are known for. The DP also doesn't fatigue your ears as much as an EV. If memory serves, according to the spec sheets, the DP is pretty much the same speaker as the Fuchs Fat S-1 speaker.

Well the main thing is that I need 4ohm speakers, which kinda narrows it down to the Weber Michigans... hopefully they are close like Tom says.

Is there a difference between 200w 12l's and 300w 12l's?

I don't believe there is any difference except for the huge heavy heat sink that was installed on the 300 watt speakers but which more often then not is long gone. Which would make the 300 watt speaker really a 200 watt speaker and not a 300 watt speaker after all. Of course if it still had the heat sink it would still be a 300 watt speaker until you pulled the heat sink of because it was too heavy.............

Not an answer to your question, but it may be of interest.
Rivera used to have EV12s specially made for them. Their website use to have a page talking about how EV changed the speaker to Rivera's dissatisfaction and Rivera arranged to have the old-style still supplied to them alone. Rivera's re-done their site in the last year or two, and if the page of interest is still there, I can't locate it. If what you really want is an EV, you may want to give them a call or e-mail. Perhaps they still have some or even continue to receive them. |
