Played a Gibson es339 today
I was absolutely blown away. The craftmanship was remarkable, and it just sounded so good. I sat in my local Sam Ash and played jazz licks on one for about an hour.. It just made everything seem almost easier to play.
I've always considered myself a Fender guy, but this.. This blew my mind. In the next few weeks I'm selling my Tele to pick one of these up. I liked the 335 as well but the body was a bit too big for my liking. All in all, the 339 is an incredible guitar.

While I don't hate these pickups they certainly don't bring out the excellent acoustic properties of my 339...
I wasn't sure about the 339 I took home until I strummed it acoustically...rings and sustains for days...well balanced and articulate...plugged in I can't get it to replicate those properties no matter how much I adjust those pickups... Mine are coming out along with that awful memphis tone circuit... Chow, Seegs

I'm planning on taking the Memphis circuit out of mine largely because I don't like the 'on/off' type action of the volume knobs. Other than that... It's my favorite guitar. Sheptone Tributes are wonderful in that guitar, as well. I'm very happy with how they bring out the sound of the body and dynamics of my playing.

Yeah, there's one 339 in particular I hope to get back one of these days. The neck position was begging for a low-wind Imperial, but the 57 Classic in the bridge worked very well there.
The wiring didn't bother me, whatever it was.

I tried out some 339's at a guitar show yesterday, but walked out with a 333 for under a grand. It just smoked everything else IMO!

Have you tried fooling around with the bridge, stoptail height, and neck relief? All of these things affect 335s quite a bit so may be that they will do so on a 339 as well. They affect it in resonance, sustain, and bloom. Last edited by bluesjuke; 07-25-2011 at 01:24 AM. Reason: leaving the "bride" alone! |

I have a 359--it totally blew away the other 339's that I was trying and was intent on buying--difference is an ebony fretboard grover turners block inlays and maybe the bracing--or I just got a good one.I had called my wife to hear the 339 I was going to buy, and she liked it, but after hearing 4 notes and a chord on the 359 she just said wow what a difference.
It is the best guitar I have ever owned. |

I liked my old 339 - but it just looked so silly on me - too shrunken - had to sell it. I like the larger bodies on the 335.

I have...had an RS locking studs (non-steel) and a lightweight aluminum TP from a 72 Les Paul Deluxe I had and ended up going back to the stock steel studs and zinc TP...while you get more chime it messes with the low end and it is not as firm with the lightweight parts in there... Have some Retrospec steel studs on the way as well as a 50's wiring harness from BCS guitars and a set of handwired Zhangbuckers with A5 magnets (Woodbucker and Slugbucker/Wide Bucker bridge) Have replaced the stock bridge with a Tonepros bridge that I like as it brings out more resonance...I prefer it unlocked as I get more harmonic content that way... Stoptail height is about a turn up from flush on the treble side and a couple of turns up on the bass side...nice playability that way... Neck relief...I had to gently work the trussrod nut back and forth as it was stuck in the beginning...my relief was at about .012" and now I have at about .07"...yes I do measure it with a Stew Mac relief gauge... Chow, Seegs
