saddest guitar solo ever?

i love emotive playing, particularly players that can nail solos that articulate an emotion. been listening to a lot of sad playing lately and was wondering what you think the saddest guitar solo is?

I can't really decide, but David Gilmour probably played it.

Joe Bonamassa Happier Times, certainly not the saddest ever...but damn if that solo isnt a sad one. You can feel it coming from dues soul, through his fingers then out of the guitar and amp...

Yeah, I agree. Probably Time off of Dark Side. That solo just punctuates what a sad-ass song that is. And the older I get, the more sad I am 'cause the song makes more and more sense to me.

There are a couple by Alex Lifeson in 'La Villa Strangiato', where he uses volume swells, that really get me.

Well, I get a lot of different emotions out of it, but Hendrix's 'Machine Gun' definitely has some sadness/pain in it.
Another one that I can think of offhand is Jeff Beck's 'Where Were You'.

I don't have a specific suggestion, but I'll bet it was in the key of Dm....

"According to legend, George Clinton, under the influence of LSD, told Eddie Hazel during the recording session to imagine he had been told his mother was dead, but then learned that it was not true. The result was the 10-minute guitar solo for which Hazel is most fondly remembered by many music critics and fans. Though several other musicians began the track playing, Clinton soon realized the power of Hazel's solo and faded them out so that the focus would be on Hazel's guitar. Critics have described the solo as "lengthy, mind-melting" and the ending as "an emotional apocalypse of sound."" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maggot_Brain_%28song%29

For whatever reason, the first thing that comes to my mind is Glen Frey's outro solo to I Can't Tell You Why. I've always thought he just makes the guitar sound like it's crying. starts at 3:10

My other choice would be Near the End by David Gilmour from About Face. starts at 3:45

"Watermelon in Easter Hay" (Zappa, Joe's Garage) probably takes the prize for me, followed closely by Alex Lifeson's solo in "Soliloquy" from 2112.

Shawn Lane, on one of his albums did a number dedicated to his sister, who I believe is deceased.
I can't recall the name of the piece, but in his playing, I could literally feel his sorrow.

Some great examples from these three:

Alex Lifeson "Under the Shadow"
David Gilmour "Comfortably Numb"
Brian May "Save Me"
