High cholesterol

regular doc check up monday - got a call today that cholesterol was WAY high - they called in a prescription. I called to get actual numbers she said the triglycerides (sp) level was 356.....then said I was walking time bomb

That scared the piss out of me

I drink a couple whiskey drinks almost every night and obviously like red meat
no real exercise.....not overweight at all

Looks like my diet is going to change and I do love good food

I quit eating red meat, pork, fried stuff, heavy cream dairy for ten years.
Did me no good. cholesterol was still out of control.

Talk about a lost decade. Now I really don't care for the taste of beef and pork. I do take the pill now and my blood is clean.

My friend started on the pill and kept eating crap. Like me, his blood is fine.

Generally speaking its not red meat or meat at all that raises cholesterol for most people. Its transfats and refined carbs! That and lack of excersize.

Don't give up red meat. Eat better red meat! And eat better, more natural carbs, use olive oil and butter instead of margarine and keep a varied diet with plenty of fruits and vegetables (especially leafy greens).

Also start an excersise regimen.

Yeah high triglycerides isn't from red meet its from carbs, baked goods, alcohol etc.
You should also get your thyroid function tested -- low thryroid can cause high triglycerides too

I really have to get back into exercise, lose some weight and cut back snacks treats too

I'll cut back on whiskey, do some exercise and be more careful about what I eat - My wife is always on my case about not eating fruit. She is going to go overboard on me with this

I was there a year ago, took Crestor, dropped it in half.

Within a year, I adjusted my diet, as little saturated fats as possible & started riding a bike and stopped taking Crestor ( as I felt like $hit on it). Today I feel great, and my last test had me in the mid 180's - yes it could be better, but it's a far cry from the low 300's of last year.

Real Oatmeal and Omega 3 Fish Oil will be a big help.

Don't give up all the things you like, but cut back in size and how often you indulge, swearing off will only work for a while for most folks. Moderation is a more realistic goal.

The number one factor with cholesterol is genetics. Good cholesterol ratio is more important than total in the big picture my doctor says.

I have the same issue. My liver works overtime making the stuff. I don't tolerate cholesterol meds well. They make me feel weak, lethargic, tired etc and I've tried a bunch of them.

Remember this, FOOD IS THE MOST POWERFUL DRUG YOU WILL EVER TAKE. Cholesterol can be controled with diet most times. Not every time but most of the time if you are willing to change. At the same time you could be minimizing your risk to a whole host of diet related diseases.

Read "Eat to Live" by Dr. Joel Fuhrman. http://www.drfuhrman.com/

My numbers;

Total serum cholesterol. 340 to 205
LDL 250 to 113
HDL 54 to 60
Triglycerides 250 to 118

This happend with just food no exercise.

I havn't tested my cholesterol in a long time I should get it checked out. You might also look at some suppements.

Red Yeast Rice
Niacin (non flush)
Gugulipid
Sytrinol
Omega fatty acids from fish oil or Flax seed or Chia Seed or....

A lot of times I think that Cholesterol is just a boogie man. Lots of people with low cholesterol have heart attacks. I've also noticed that over the years pharm companies keep lowering the suggested threshold where they recommend you take the meds. This feels like an exercise in taking other wise healthy people and making them patients.

Good luck.
